Sonos STP issue?

Does anyone know with 100% certainty if possible Sonos looping issues occur if all Sonos units are connected via WiFi (not SonosNet)?

We've had multiple network projects with managed switches where WiFi drops erratically occur and the network companies (Ruckus and Araknis on these two projects) and Sonos can't give me clear answers.

Thoughts?

STP issues occur when a sonos device is connected to the network multiple ways. That is Wifi OR Sonosnet(Which is wifi) AND Hard Wired Ethernet.

if you have read the forums long enough you have heard that tech-support has definitively said to only wire one Sonos device and let the others communicate over SonosNet. Others will say they have been definitively told to wire every Sonos unit. I have found both work.

Some say you have to disable SonosNet on all players except one in case you need to add certain players later on.  I’ve never had to do that.

As the previous post stated, it is when you wire multiple units and have SonosNet active that you can have loops that lock up the network. It tends to be system specific. Sometimes a Boost operating wirelessly will provide the link to a more distant player that is needed.

Nowadays on Wi-Fi I don’t think I have ever had those kind of issues. It is kind of interesting to note that SonosNet was what made Sonos so reliable, a solid internal Wi-Fi network that rarely failed, because regular Wi-Fi was not all that trustworthy. Now times have changed and standard Wi-Fi can do what SonosNet always used to do.

With definitive answers seemingly at odds with one another, frankly it means there are many options for getting it done and working reliably.

Thanks guys. We've got hundreds of Sonos units in the field and it seems like the only time we see issues are with managed networks and with a hard-wired Sonos unit. We'll probably set up a VLAN for Sonos and see if this fixes things.

Sonos can causes issues when they are fully wireless. Someone else put 6 amps on WiFi and at some point (much later) down the road it took down the network with very similar characteristics to a network storm.

google mesh and orbi have lots of looping issues! its exactly what tom touched on.. sonos net was bullet proof, its what made them. now not so much
