Upcoming install with a Sonos Arc and Samsung TV. The TV has only 2 HDMI inputs which will be used for Xfinity receiver and a Roku Ultra. The optical output of the TV will connect to the Sonos Arc using the Sonos HDMI adapter to provide audio. The optical volume output is fixed, so how do I adjust volume on the Arc? This is my first Arc.

Sonos Arc
Samsung   TV UN65NU6950
Xfinity receiver
Roku Ultra
URC MX-990

Send Sonos Arc or Playbar IR commands to the Arc to change the volume.

They should be in the URC database.

I have not had to do this with an ARC yet, but with the PlayBar and the BEAM, you go into the sound bar settings to remote set up. It should learn whatever volume commands you have elected to store in the remote, whether the TV volume commands, or some dummy audio commands from a receiver that you are not actually using. The second way will sometimes avoid the TV on screen message every time you adjust the volume.
There is no truth anymore. Only assertions. The internet world has no interest in truth, only vindication for preconceived assumptions.

There are no intrinsic IR Volume commands. ARC can be trained to accept an arbitrary set of IR Volume commands. Pick any device that is not nearby and train ARC to use those IR commands.

When you are talking about ARC with capital letters, is that the ARC return channel or the Sonos Arc?

Yes. Wait, what?

BTW, you seem to be doing a lousy job of staying retired! 😀

I've upgraded from retired to part time.
