Hey Brent,

Because of some past observations I've made with regards to Xfinity boxes, I told her to turn off Dolby in the X1 box, and just use the Stereo setting temporarily. She reported that the audio is now staying in sync. Would this support your theory?

Yes, I believe so. When you make that change you are forcing an EDID reset.

I'm thinking maybe they just need a new cable box. The one they have doesn't look terribly old, but maybe it we get the latest one it will have firmware/hardware that won't cause this.

I do not think a box change will help (sorry).

Many thanks for the tip Brent and Andrew. I have a similar sync issue on my system with my Sonos Arc increasingly lagging my Samsung QN900a. Flipping to stereo and back on the XFi box is a much quicker fix than I had found and it's also helpful to understand why that works, by forcing an EDID reset.

With respect to Xfinity, is the audio sync drifting over time while watching the same program without changing anything? I'm wondering if the Xfinity audio and video are actually two separate streams to the cable box. We have a system of several monitors in a bar and their "experts" didn't want to install a proper distribution and control system. Each TV has a dedicated cable box. If you tune all of the TV's to the same channel, the TV's will start more or less synchronized, but over time the displays (both audio and video) will drift several seconds out of sync. Only one TV can be connected to the PA system, else the audio sync would be chaos.

They mostly watch sports play by play and it is difficult to make any comment with respect to drifting voice sync on a given TV, but I wouldn't be surprised if it drifted.

Are you basically saying the EDID should reset every time the TV and cable box reconnect, but it is not doing that I guess?
If so, why would it make a difference if the cable box was in Dolby or Stereo? Wouldn't changing the cable box back to Dolby now also trigger an EDID reset?

If I replace the existing cable box with a different model cable box, like the 4k model, seems like there would be a good chance this might fix it - of course I don't know which piece of equipment is causing this EDID/hot plug issue. The TV is a 2022 model so I'm jumping to the conclusion that the cable box may be the issue as I think it could be 3-4 years old.

I don't think I ever see sync problems when connected to a TV only. I also did a job with the box connected to TV and the HDMI ARC from TV going into Denon surround receiver. No sync issues.

Good to know. I don't know why but I'm suddenly getting a bunch of audio sync issues with Xfinity boxes.

I have another customer complaining about audio drift and it's a conventional system with control using a Marantz and Samsung TV.

I'm going to try the Metra EDID reset device and see what happens.
