Does anyone know if the music channels on Comcast or DirecTV are licensed for playback in a business?

I really dislike how confusing this whole "music in a business" thing is. They would make a LOT more money if they made it easy to pay licensing fees for whatever you wanted to play.

Don't know for sure, but I would think if the channels are available on a BUSINESS direcTV or Comcast account then it would be ok. After all, they are paying more because they are showing their channels to the public.

Like ASCAP or BMI?

Both DirecTV and ComCrap have music services for business. The DirecTV service is called SonicTap.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

YEs, All channels are covered when you have a business subscription.

We use Rockbot. Pretty happy with it. Customize, tailor, edit, create playlists, scheduling, etc.

It is kind of a virtual jukebox.

It is for commercial to keep the music police happy.

NOPE, I have clients with a business account with over 20 DTV receivers and the music channels are a extra charge and for them it's a huge charge. Don't know why exactly or how they determine fees.

Comcast I don't know about.

Let me fix that statement. All Comcast channels you pay for are covered. The music channels are an add on to the subscription, otherwise you would never see or hear them on the output of the boxes.

So Yes, They are covered for ASCAP and BMI shakedowns.

Jim, You can PM me if you want a price per month. I have some info from a recent
quote for a salon I am working on.

Canadians YMMV

You're absolutely right, navigating the complexities of business music licensing can be frustrating! Regarding your specific question, the licensing situation for music channels on DIRECTV and other providers in a business setting can be nuanced and varies based on factors like:

Channel package: Specific DIRECTV packages may include channels with business music licenses, while others might not. You'll need to carefully review the license agreements associated with your plan.
Performance rights organizations (PROs): Several PROs, like ASCAP and BMI, collect and distribute royalties for artists and songwriters. Depending on the channel and its agreements, these fees might be included in your DIRECTV subscription or require separate licensing deals with the PROs.
Local zoning and regulations: Some localities have additional rules governing music playback in specific business types. It's important to check your local regulations to ensure compliance.
To clarify your options for DIRECTV music channels in your business:

Contact DIRECTV business sales: Discuss your specific needs and ask about channels with business music licenses included in their packages.
Check directly with the music channels: Some channels may offer separate business licensing options beyond DIRECTV packages.
Consider music streaming services: Services like Spotify Business or Pandora for Business offer curated playlists with pre-negotiated business licenses.
While it's true that a simplified licensing system for businesses would be ideal, the current landscape requires some research and proactive steps. Don't hesitate to reach out to DIRECTV, individual channels, or alternative music streaming services for detailed information and guidance.

By taking the time to understand your options and navigate the licensing specifics, you can avoid potential legal issues and ensure your business enjoys a seamless, music-filled atmosphere!

Remember, investing in proper licensing protects both you and the artists whose music enriches your business environment. Good luck!
