Could anyone please tell me what sound fields the Sony Bravia Z series's optical digital audio out capabilities are? I don't have a manual handy.

You don't have a manual but you have the model number and an internet connection. That's one fact more than you gave us. I don't mean to be a deek, but why are you asking instead of looking for the manual online?

Sony manuals can be found at sonystyle.com, and every item I've ever seen for sale at crutchfield.com has a manual download. I got the manual from crutchfield.

On page 11 of the manual, the jack is identified thus:
Connects to the optical audio input of your digital audio
equipment that is PCM/Dolby* Digital compatible.

Page 15's label of that jack is
Digital audio equipment (A/V Receiver/Home Theater

Page 56,
When using HDMI input with Super Audio CD or DVD-Audio,
DIGITAL AUDIO OUT (Optical) may not provide an audio signal.

Page 58 has
PCM/Dolby Digital optical signal

If this information is not correct for your model number,....
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Ernie thank you for your attempt to chastise me and answer the question at the same time ... as far as the chastise part, you fail. :)

Yes, sonystyle.com does has manuals for now shipping equipment like the one I was asking about, good advise.
I also have the hard copy of the manual at home but was posting from my phone on the road ... It is fairly hard to open and search through 60pg manuals on the 2" screen on my particular phone especially while on the highway...
I was trying to help someone find a solution to an issue while I was on the road.

Thank you for the answer of PCM/Dolby Digital

You're welcome, and thanks for the clarification. I see I now need to consider that these posts really might be made by Dick Tracy, looking sideways at the little screen on his arm, and totally unable to see a pdf at that size.

I felt it only fair to answer the question since I could find something. That was the 46" and I hope the jack packs are all the same.

yes 40 and 46 have same setup

yeah, I at least, do a lot of my message board forum reading and small forum posts from my phone. I can open and read pdf files on it but hunting for a buried note or spec tends to be little hard.

thanks again.
