I have an old Evation Serial IR receiver (but not a serial port on my new MCE PC, so I'm trying to avoid spending the $15 on a serial card!).
Can the Windows MCE IR receiver be used by any other software to control the PC? I really want mouse and Winamp controls, badly. I've got a URC MX-850 to play with.

That seems to relate to using the MCE's IR Blaster (not IR Reciever). Guess I'll get a serial port card and keep using the old IRMan.

No the whole idea of the package is to enable to send AND receive IR. The MCE however is not a universal remote receiver and will only work with devices that use the Philips chipset.
Incidentally if you try to use the IRMan with the MCE remote control, then you will have a few problems as some of the buttons produce the same codes as other buttons.

I loaded the MX-850 with some random set of codes that I've been using with the IRMan. I'm thinking of changing to a set of wireless keyboard controls to hopefully make a mouse movement easier for me. I don't use it all that often, but it's nice to have a mouse control on the remote and not need to get up and run to the keyboard.
