and I'm thinking of replacing it - likely the MX-800. I have a couple of questions with my BIGGEST being:

Can consumer's acquire the editing software for the MX-800?

I know that URC stopped allowing consumers to download the remote's software sometime back - and understand why (I'm a professional software engineer).

I'm fine working with a dealer for the initial setup (which might be simply using my existing templates); it's the fine tuning of macros that's got me hesitating. I want to add my home-built PVR into the mix (MythTV over CentOS) and that will take a bit of experimenting - I can't do too radical of changes since my wife is .. ahem.. well educated on using the MX-700. ;)

Any info/insights, greatly appreciated!

TIA!

MX-800 is discontinued. Would look at the MX-880. Working with a dealer just gives you the advantage of having someone to call. CCP is far from rocket science.

Tks for the info kgossen. My question about using a dealer is more about how do I acquire the S/W for programming, since URC isn't distributing directly to consumers.

Get a MX850. It's editor is stand alone and most closely resembles the MX700. It's not supported by CCP and its easy to program.

This will program the MX700 and 800 and 850, use it to dowload from the 700 while it is still working. Then just upload to the MX800 MX850, then add the new devices etc

You'll have a problem using a newer 850 with your 700 file, the chipset changed a while ago and the IR won't work.

If you want to pm your MX700 file I'm happy to try it with my MX850 and see how it plays

I went through this about a month ago when our 700 died. I originally wanted to replace it with a 850 mainly because the config would have carried over, but it seems those aren't really supported anymore.

I ended up with a 780. at first I didn't like it but now that I've used it some it is growing on me. There are still some things about it I don't like, but I'll get over that.
