Looking to get a used MRF-3?0 for a friend for a gift. He has a very basic one room setup (TV, Amp, Netplayer, DVD). Wants to put stuff in closet & hang TV on wall. Will the MRF-300 be good enough? Whats the difference?

Most likely you'll end up with a (narrow-band) MRF350 as the (wide-band) MRF300 has been discontinued for 2 years now. What URC remote is going to be used?

Still looking at the best deal, more than likely a MX-850, MX-950 (used).

You could also look at the MRF - 260
I use them for bedroom set up's that just have
the basic TV / Cable box / DVD player.

There are only 4 IR outputs so it would depend
on how many components he has in the system

If the TV is exposed that will not have to use a IR
port. Just put the TV commands for any macros first.

Dont get the MX-950. It is too big and the battery doesnt last long and the few units I have handled have had serious problems with resets.

The MX-900 is a far better remote.

And the MX950 doesn't play well with anything other than Windows XP as it's an old, discontinued remote. Buy a MX900 and a MRF260 (and double-head emitters for more devices if need be).

If you need a lot of real estate on the LCD (like the 950) the MX-850 is an option. But for the same price as the 900 you are giving up some capabilites that may be useful.

If you are buying a used remote and an RF base station you have to be careful. The newer base stations are narrow band and someone should validate this but I don't think they work with some of the older remotes.

The MX-900 and the MRF-350 are workhorses.. very reliable. I like the MX-900 over even the MX-980 because the 900 doesnt require a base station and its batteries last long enough. The 980 on the other hand requires you to place it on the charging station every day.. and if you dont, you wil have a dead remote.

Every MRF300 I installed is still in service. :) Although a lot of them took a lot of tweaking gains, moving antennas, etc to get them working reliably, they are still going strong.

MX800/850 are still one of my old time favorites. MX900 has not been the most reliable for us. We have had over a half dozen go bad right after warranty expired. Buttons wore out on all of them. I would rather have a 450 than a 900 at this point. But we sure sell a butt load of 900s. I guess the failure rate is not bad considering 6 out of maybe 100-150 have failed:)

I drool for MX5000 though. :P

I would also like to get a hold of an old Sidekick or 2. :)
