Just to be clear (so no one else falls into this trap), all I did was accidentally plug the ZM-24 into the XP-8 Expansion Port, and not the COM port. I had no other power supply plugged into the ZM-24.
This burned out one of the chips (probably a polarized capacitor or diode) within the ZM-24. Got some nice smoke out of it almost instantly. To put those two connectors right next to each other (and with the same RJ45 jack) is asking for trouble.
I did something similar. I plugged the cat5 for the rs232 connection on a projector into the RTI COM port.... for a few hours before I caught it...
I couldn't get a ZM24 to power up from the RTI COM port after that, but if you plugged in the wall wart AND the cat5 to the ZM24 then it would work. I was told by tech support that power shouldn't backfeed INTO the XP-8, but I still got the pinout for the RJ45 and disconnected what would have been power coming from the XP-8.
