I guess I should have clarified.

I am currently using an HP Pavilion ze 5170. It does not have a serial port so I use a usb adapter. I have had some minor problems but not many. The main reason I want to eliminate the converter is for troubleshooting. If I do run into a problem now, my first step is to check the converter. If I had no converter the I wouldn't have to worry.
