In fact, if at all possible, you should use RCA or S-Video outputs from the cable box to the DVD recorder. If it's got two sets of outputs, use the other one to go to the VCR and then to the TV.
Using the coax is taking the signal the way you get it via the S-Video cable, then modulating it onto channel 3 with a $2.00 TV station, then tuning it in and getting video again. It CAN'T be as good as with the video and audio cables.
