NONE of the codes he needed were pre-programmed? Using built-in codes saves space, even if you have to fill in the rest of the buttons with your own.
Also, make sure he's programming them correctly by HOLDING down the button until the remote's learned it. It senses a repeating code and stores it once with a repeat command, while if you say just push the button it may store it two and a half times, but with no repeat command. If when you hold a button down the "sending" graphic doesn't continue to flash or stays lit for quite a while after you release the button, you haven't done it right.
I've had to program quite a lot of my remote -- much more than I figure the norm would be -- however you should remember that NO remote has UNLIMITED memory. I haven't hit full yet.
