Have you tried all the codes listed for the UR5-8400?
They are 001, 011, 055, 187, 053, 112 and 205.
I couldn't find anything in the receiver manual to show
that the AV1/AV2 code is present, and the front of the
receiver has none of the usual buttons used when changing
command modes.
You could try turning it off, then press and hold the
power button and press each of the few buttons visible
on the face of the receiver and see if anything happens,
which I doubt.
If you have any other programmable remotes you could try
making one of them work the volume on the receiver.

Thanks very much for the quick reply. I did try all of those codes, nothing worked for me. I also tried them all on every input (Aux, DVD, VCR, TV, CBL).
I tried the powering off and powering back on with each button held -- and it didn't seem to do anything. There was no message listed on the display.
Also - I don't have any other remotes.
If it comes down to buying a new universal remote -- any recommendations on one that would be guaranteed to work with the Sony device, and a Time Warner DVR / Cable Box?
It's hard to me to imagine I'm the only STR-KS2000 user that wants to use a separate remote to control volume. :(
