I figured out what I needed to do: I had to disable Bluetooth in the TV's settings for Remotes & Accessories.
Once I did that, the TV's remote became an IR remote (I could see a flash with key presses with my phone's camera). Then I was able to use the TV's remote buttons to teach the buttons of the MX-850, including the BACK, HOME, and SETTINGS I couldn't earlier. When I finished, I went back into the TV's settings and reenabled Bluetooth. All this does is allow the TV remote to control the DirecTV Genie. Not that it's needed, as I already could do that with the MX-850.
Glad to have this behind me. Thanks again for bringing the Bluetooth issue to my attention.
