I think more and more companies will use custom RF, Bluetooth, and maybe Z-Wave and Zigbee as the ultimate lock-in to their vertical channel. I'm sure that they hate all of this potential revenue leaking away to upstart 3rd parties.

One can look at this through "half empty" or "half full" glasses. The user interface that these large companies come up with is usually very poor and very buggy and therefore begging some 3rd party action. But there will be a higher bar for the 3rd parties to cross along with some intellectual property costs and probably some DMCA issues to sweeten or sour the deal. Bottom line will be the usual cycle of early adopting integrators making more money until the hacks filter down to mainstream and the cycle begins again.
