Well sadly it looks like that's not possible with the R40. All we can do is delete all the text from the blue icon so that it's blank.
The R50 (the predecessor to this newer R40) did have the ability to hide an LCD icon according to the R50 review here on RemoteCentral and in the online R50 quick-start guide, but apparently they didn't carry this feature over to the R40.
