Sony's quartet of preprogrammed remote controls offer control over 7, 5, 4 and 2 home theater components, respectively. All feature a modern and attractive ergonomic design.

Strengths:
It looks nice?
Weaknesses:
Is anything but universal.
Review:
I've tried this remote on two different TV's and one digital cable box, and it only fuctioned partially on one of the TV's.
The TV that it didn't work at all on is a 27" panasonic HD TV, and the digital cable box that it didn't work at all on is a magnavox. It did however work for turning the power off on an RCA TV, but it would not turn the power back on or control anything else on it. I've tried programing these components over and over and the result is always the same. It would be nice, as others have said, if there were some little light that came on to let you know when the remote is responding to what you are doing.
Normally I would think something was wrong with this remote, but after reading about all the other devices people are having trouble programing for I think this remote is just a bad product. If you buy this remote, do so only if you are prepared to return it. I'm stuck with mine, but I think I will throw it away.
Forgot to mention, my review below is refering to the RM-V402 model. I have no idea whether or not the others are this bad. I don't really feel like runing out any trying another Sony.

Weaknesses:
Had trouble getting my Sony DirecTV receiver (SAT-B2) too work.
Review:
Nice remote other than it did not work with a Sony brand DirecTV receiver "out of the box". Specifically I followed the instructions on programming the SAT device but could not get it to work. After resetting the remote then trying a few more times it eventually did work. Worked great with my Phillips-Magnavox TV and my Panasonic DVD player. ($9.86 @ Wal-Mart)

Strengths:
Looks good
Weaknesses:
I found it very difficult to program.
Don't like that there is no back light.
Doesn't work with Hughes Direct TV equipment.
Review:
Though the packaging had to be destroyed so that you could open the product, I am going to try to return this product for a refund.
The process of pressing a hard-to-hold set button simultaneously with the power button was physically a hard thing for me to do. Often, nothing would happen (even though I had followed the directions.) It would help to have some flash of light or a beeping sound to indicate that the remote is actually in the programming mode and receiving the programming instructions.
It will operate only about half the features of the Hughes Direct TV receiver. Very frustrating especially is the fact that the cable/Satellite button on the remote will not program to work with the Hughes Direct TV receiver. I had to reprogram the buttons to allow the Satellite function to be controlled by the Receiver button, (I think.) And then it would only perform minimal functions.

Strengths:
Nice feel.
Weaknesses:
Got it work with my sony tv but try to programme it for BEll Expressvu and Starchoice receiver and both didn't work!!! So go back to store to get another remote just in case this one is defective. Tried the second remote and same thing. When I got to the store, they where at lest 5 others return on RM-V302.

Strengths:
cheap
Weaknesses:
doesnt work for its own brand
Review:
can someone explain why this sony universal remote doesnt work with a sony reciever? worked with my panasonic tv just fine but not with another sony branded device... pointless if you ask me. there is no indication of modes so you never know if you are doing the right thing or not and buttons dont seem to respond very well unless pressed hard. i spent 3 hrs doing the search for code figuring there just had to be a mistake that i had made... what a waste.. im taking this pos back

Strengths:
Price, Function, Layout.
Weaknesses:
Limited function support.
Review:
I originally bought this remote for my kids. I purchased a higher end, expensive remote for my wife and I, and purchased this "cheapo" for the kids.
Our high end remote has been returned twice; see my review of the Kameleon. We have now started trying other high remotes for us, but think this "cheapo" is going to be the remote for us.
I easily programmed the remote for all of my components, except my series I Tivo, but with a quick call and a few posts on remotecentral.com and I got that resolved.
The remote has limited function support, so only the common features of my components are controllable. For example, on my Yamaha 5.1 Receiver, I cannot choose different audio programs.
All in all, this remote rocks for the price. I recommend it highly.
