If you go to the Outlaw audio website and download the user manual for their (only) reciever, you will see that their remote control (obviously sourced from OFA) has some striking similarities to Rob's 15-1996 in terms of layout. Rob may be owed some royalties here.

Seriously though, if OFA is willing to make a complete custom remote for what must be a small outfit like Outlaw Audio (I am assuming), I wonder what their minimum order is to have a custom remote made. Just dreaming of course, but how many people would have to sign up for them to be willing to do a custom job like Rob's model? 100? 500? What if just enough interest was expressed to get them to make it as a regular OFA model.

Anyway, even if they ripped Rob off, I thought the similarity was striking. The remote can also be seen in this months issue of "Sound and Vision."

Heh, I doubt you could go from Rob's post to writing it up in a user manual in 15 days... especially since those magazines have at least a month or two of lead time. I think generally you need to order at least 1000, with better pricing for more.

I was kidding about them _literally_ stealing the layout, but it is uncanny. It must just be a more sensible layout.

Sort of reminds me about the Denon Aktis... regardless of how good a remote it us or isn't, there was an unusual number of my ideas for the Pronto incorported.

The Outlaw Audio remote is also a UEIC remote, in fact it is their Catalyst 48.

While the layout of the numeric/menu buttons is similar, I was disappointed to find out that Outlaw did not select the option learning and macro features, otherwise their remote would be a very nice remote.

That being said, when I look at the Best Buy flier each week, I do see a couple of receivers that are also using the same remote, and it's possible that they did select the optional learning and macro features, so there might be some pretty cool remotes out there.

I have heard that One For All is coming out with a new remote this November called the URC-8780, but I don't know much about it or how it works. It's supposed to be based on the Producer 8 but without the Home Theater key. I don't know if it has learning, and if it does, if it's limited by the same silly restrictions as the Prod 8. Wait and see, I guess!

Later,
Rob.

The Catalyst 48 is THE remote, with a few additions in the holes on the bottom. I like the way everything is moved up slightly on the remote compared to the 1994.

Rob, can you find out what those receivers are..... I'd love to track down those remotes and find out about the learning, memory, macros, etc!!

Actually, having held the Cat48 in my hand, it doesn't compare as favorably to the 1994 after all. I do like the fact that the numeric buttons and the arrow buttons have swapped places, but many of the really useful buttons that are between the volume and channel buttons on the 1994, would have to end up at the botton on the cat48 as there's only 2 or 3 buttons between the vol/ch buttons on the cat48.

If you study the Best Buy and Circuit City fliers that come in the Sunday papers, you can usually tell which receivers come with a UEIC remote. If the ad mentions a learning remote then this could be the receiver that you need to get.

Let me see if UEIC are allowed to tell me which receivers use their remotes, you know how this NDA stuff is, they might not be permitted to give out that kind of info.

Rob.
