My RCA RCU810 remote is wearing out ("5" key doesn't work well), so I need a new remote; also, I just got a new DVD player, the Oppo OPDV971H. I've looked through the code lists for quite a few of the OFA remotes, and I can't find codes for this DVD player; are any available? I need another 8-device (at least) remote. I've been considering the 8810 and 8910, but, since I like to key buttons by feel, I'm not sure how I'd like the "angled" placement of the Vol and Ch +/- keys; also, many of the keys, even the Transport set, have the same shape. For these reasons, I've considered the 8820 and 10820. Is the number of devices controlled the only difference between these? I also note that they don't have JP1 capability; I haven't used JP1 before (only recently became aware of it), but is it a must-have? I'm also apprehensive about their not being backlit; I have used the backlighting feature of my RCU810. Can someone please steer me in the right direction? Thanks very much.

This could be quite hard without JP1.

I found a few bits of info:

In this FAQ from Oppo
[Link: oppodigital.com]
it says:
Q: What is the universal remote control code for the OPPO OPDV971H remote controller?
A: The code is "49B6". If your remote does not allow you to enter letter "B" try "49116" because "B" is "11" in 16-bit.

I doubt there is ANY universal remote in which you can directly use that information. I think the folks at Oppo are seriously confused about how universal remotes work. BUT to an expert, that statement is a strong hint that they use NEC protocol, device number 73 (which would be a big help if you use JP1).

I also found this:
[Link: remotecentral.com]
which gives the Oppo codes as a mxd file for an MX-700. Unfortunately I don't know how to extract Pronto Hex or other formats I might understand from an mxd file. Probably some other expert here does know.

I did look at the raw contents of that file and at least confirmed that it is NEC protocol, device 73.

I looked in Rob's list of OFA setup codes and found only CBL/0248 and SAT/0358 use NEC protocol, device 73. If you had either of those setup codes all the buttons would be wrong, but could be moved around with KeyMoves to make them right. Unfortunately those setup codes are only in European and/or obscure models of OFA remote, not in the models you are considering buying (nor in the RCU810).

The urc-8820 & 10820 both have listed in their manual's 141 brands of dvd players, but none are Oppo. These new remotes now have a larger learning memory, I taught ove 100 commands before running out, so if you have the original remote, you could teach.

The One-for-All set up code for the OPDV971H is DVD 1224. Doubt if you will find that pre-loaded in any of their products, but if you have an upgradeable unit ilke the 8820 or 10820 as an alternative to learning you can also call OFA customer service and have it downloaded.

The 8820 & 10820 aren't phone upgradeable, you need to send them in. And code 1224 isn't in them either.

Thanks, all, for your replies. :)

Edmund, which ones ARE phone upgradeable? I was foolishly assuming that the "UPGRADEABLE" mention on the OFA website meant via phone. The lack of online Manual availability also makes it difficult to know what has what.

Phone upgradeable remotes include the OFA urc-8910, 9910, HT-PRO, and all of the Kameleons.

Thanks, Edmund. :) Where can I find info on the HT-PRO? If it's on the ofausa site, I missed it.

It was actually was sold under UEI brand, not OFA. It might be hard to find now, the price dropped to $8. Its the same as the 9910, execpt for the seude back and its little darker. I bought 3 at tweeter for $25, before it dropped to $8 else where.

Thanks, Edmund. :) I'm beginning to see why a lot of folks are attracted to the PC-programmable remotes. :)

I have a Cinema 7. Is there anyway to get it to work with the Oppo? I also have a JP1 cable.

Which Cinema 7? The URC-7200 family or the URC-7800 family? Do you know how to use your JP1 cable?

Also, do you still have the original Oppo remote?

The 7800's have learning and (except for the connector) built-in JP1 support. The 7200's have no learning and are quite hard to modify for JP1 use.

The basic JP1 method is to learn and decode a batch of signals from the original remote, transfer them to an upgrade being constructed, then delete them to allow the learning memory to be reused for the next batch.

There may be shortcuts to reduce that effort, or there may be workarounds if you lack the original remote or your JP1 remote has no learning.

Assuming alfaman is correct about DVD 1224, you might be able to go to some support web site for a European OFA remote that has both .wav and JP1 support (7562 or 8060, etc.). By claiming to own one of those remotes, I think you can get a .wav file for that remote for DVD 1224 (I've never done it so I don't have details). You can then use JP1 software to create a config for that remote (even though you don't have one) using that .wav file and see roughly the same info you would have seen using learning, which can then be manually copied into an upgrade for your model remote. Maybe that's easier than learning.

I have the learning 7800. I also know how to use the JP1 cable. I do have to upgrade it because it has the 25pin serial connector instead of 9 that computers come with now.

I completely programmed my 7800 a while back and have not looked at it since. Basically, it just keeps working. I do have to keep basterdizing other remote controls. I cut off the rubber tips and glue them on to the 7800. :)

I just bought the OPPO and it hasn't come yet (it will be here Tuesday). I wasn't thinking and forgot I would have to redo all the DVD codes.

Most of the JP1 cables has the 25pin parallel port connector (printer port), not any kind of serial connector. Are you sure your JP1 cable is serial?
