Right. I know that and have assigened the amp_0135 to my Producer 8. Everything operates as indicated on the advanced code list available at hifi-remote.com. However, the power function is not a toggle. It operates like a Harman-Kardon receiver (which I also have). The supplied remote has a "power on" and "standby" button, the latter of which turns the receiver off (into standby mode, obviously). The 180 advance code for OFA in the 0135 device will duplicate the "power on" function, but nothing I have found will duplicate the "standby" function. This seemed odd to me because on the hifi-remote site they had "discreet codes" for the HK receivers, but nothing for ONKYO. Is ONKYO intentionally hiding the ball, or is it simply a matter that no one has stumbled on the correct code as yet?
I am sure if understood better the technical operation of these remote devices I would not ask what must seem to you to be very elemental questions. I would not do so if I had not surfed all of the available informations without a solution.
Again, it looks like the only solution would be a JP1, but I am not sure from what I have read in this thread that anyone has actually checked the power off code in amp_0842 to see if it works. Do you think I could be reasonably certain to find something that works if I went this route?

Chip,

Yes, I am reasonably sure, 99.999%. It seems that the discrete "off" is in that 0842 device code. With JP-1, you could create a device upgrade cloning ueic's new 0842 in KM. I suspect that to get all the functions working you'd want to go just one step farther by making a device combo code in KM; combining the 0135 and 0842. Jon, John, and a host of others could help you with making the combo. If Jon doesn't see this thread, you could ask him at JP-1 by directing a question directly to him, in the subject line: "Jon: Onkyo model xxx, what would be the best way?" It looks like there's an awful lot of functions on this receiver, I don't know that you could jam them all on the buttons available in just one device upgrade on one device key. You may want to split them up is some fashion comfortable for you; and set them up on 2 device buttons. Maybe sharing common buttons like volume.
That "standby" is apparantly like a normal vcr or tv "off", which is really a standby. That's to keep power going for the clocks, and the tube warm so it doesn't take so long to get a picture. Fully cutting power (i.e. pulling the plug) probably wipes out all your settings, and standby keeps them set. Many "offs" are really "standby", but Onkyo is honest enough to call a spade a spade.
With the complexity your receiver has, I really think your best solution would be JP-1. OK, it may take a while to get it all worked out, I'm sure you'll do like everyone else and make modifications because I don't think anyone is ever satisfied with their first attempts, we always seem to later come up with a "better" idea. Jp-1 would make it a lot easier and quicker to make those modifications, and allow for "experimenting" since you can always go back to a saved configuration in a matter of seconds. Try doing that manually; piles of scraps of paper and likely a good half-hour or more, and tired fingers;)

Chip,
Apparantly the "off" in 0842 does work because someone has gotten it to work in a pronto, and that's where Jon decoded the efcs, from a pronto ccf file. 0842 is ueic's upgrade version for Nec1, 210.108. In KM you would define your remote, protocol Nec 1, main device 210, and subdevice 108. assign the functions and efc's on the function's tab, assign those functions on the buttons tab, and copy the device upgrade and/ protocol upgrade into IR>devices>add and
IR>protocol>add (I don't think you'll need one).
you aren't restricted to calling it 0842, but since it isn't native to your remote, you may as well.

Thanks for all or your help. I have taken the first step by downloading the "JP1 for Beginners" by Tommy Tyler. I will study this and see if I am up to the daunting task of trying to upgrade my remotes by cable. By the way, what does "KM" mean? "key mover"? This abbreviation is not in the glossary of terms of the manual that I downloaded this morning.

KM = keymap-master, which is a "program" for creating your own setup code upgrades. This "program" happens to be implimented as an Excel spreadsheet, so you need Excel to run it (not many people use Excel as a programming language to the extreme that is done in KM).

If you have the Onkyo remote, teach to the 2104, and since its going to take up more than one button anyway. Then it won't matter if its not on the power button.

Edmund,

way back, chip said he didn't want to learn the "standby" because he wants to use it in a macro. Learned signals will work erratically generally in macros, if at all.
