Sorry guys. I checked to see if I can share files directly with beta testers, but I can't. I did learn that testers will get their hands on the latest version of all of the templates I've completed so far, though.

It's funny... I've done more unique layouts for this remote than I ever did for the Pronto, but so far, nobody has seen any of them. I guess I kind of got used to the "instant feedback" nature of Remote Central!

OK - I don't understand - will the templates come with the final product or is Dale designing these as a 3rd party to sell (or give them away??)to installers and end users?

Further - is template design something end users will be able to do (or modify), or will they just be available?

The templates I'm designing will ship with the product. They are all driven by the existing MX family database, so anyone familiar with the MX family will be able to very, very quickly use any of the templates to create a configuration.

The editing software will be for anyone who wants to program the remote. I expect that just like other popular touch screen remotes, there will be an online community sharing MX 3000 files.

But, since this remote will ship will more than one "standard" interface, there should be a lot more variety in the initial configurations. Then the user community will start adding more diversity to that.

I do plan to have some 3rd party stuff available for the remote not too long after it ships, but for now 100% of my effort is going into making cool stuff that will come in the box.

Thanks,
Dale

Can anyone tell me how configurable these units are to control x-10 home automation as well? I have a new home extensively wired for x-10 and wish to control it all from the same remote as my new Sony XBR 50 in Plasma and AV System. If the 3000 can be exclusivly configured for x-10 I want to use other units in my livingroom just for lighting control.

yes, it should be able to handle the X-10 lights, like any learning IR remote. The key is to get an IR543 or IR543AH that receives IR and transmits X10

When I first saw mention of this remote I was quite interested as it appears to have a huge range of capabilities. That said, at CEDIA this year I picked it up and my first reaction was, "Why are the channel up/down and volume up/down on the wrong side?" Now no offense to lefties out there, but it seems a bit of an odd layout choice with the common useage of these functions. Of course this was just a first impression. What comments might any beta testers have on the matter?

Regards,

Mark Seaton

You get used to the channel and volume buttons on the left side very easily.

The cursor and select buttons are used by me more than the volume and channel buttons and they sit right under my right thumb. I am right-handed.

But, the buttons on the remote are few and so well-arranged that you will find that using the buttons where they are becomes second-nature very quickly.

And this is coming from a "button remote" person who loves his MX-800.

Quick question: do the buttons send a signal the first time you press them? This is my biggest beef with my Pronto NG. When I press a hard button, it doesn't send an IR signal. Instead, it turns on the screen. I then have to press the button a second time to actually send a signal.

Internal variables are for tracking the state of different devices modes. Regarding MX-3000, can you make a touch button having the title "Surround Mode: " changing on every single press of this button (besides sending an appropriate IR code) like " Movie", " Music", "ProLogic"? I'm thinking of the way to mimic the OEM remote buttons that do loop through the surround modes thus having minimal amount of buttons. If that isn't smart way to go, please folks tell me smarter approach. Otherwise I do anticipate that if it's doable on high-end MX-3000 it would be possible on the new upcoming generation of more affordable MX-700/MX-800 remotes (i.e. changing the custom labels on LCD on pressing buttons and/or inside macros).

You could use variables to accomplish this, but you can also simply program a page with a button called "mode". The page 1 Mode button is programmed with a two step macro, a "movie" command and a jump to a page 2 Mode button (with a "music" command and a jump to a page 3 Mode button (with a "prologic" command and a jump to a page 4 Mode button) etc.

No, if the unit's not "awake". However, you can set it to "wake up" when you move it.
