Somebody asked for facts.
As far as sea levels rising 24 feet as Algore’s movie stated, the 1996 report of the IPCC, the U.N. science advisory group, projects a "best-value" rise by 2100 of about 50 cm (20 inches).

Antarctica contains 90% of the frozen water on the planet so the question of temp change in Antarctica is important. Average temps at the closest city to Antarctica, Punta Arenas, Chile have dropped from 6.7 degrees celsius in 1888 to 5.9 degrees Celsius in 2004. This is from CISS, NASA.

More information.

From Nature magazine, 2002. 415, pages 517-520. Article on “Antarctic climate cooling and terrestrial ecosystem response” by Doran, Priscu, Lyons et al states “From 1986 to 2000 central Antarctic valleys cooled .7deg. C per decade with serious ecosystem damage from cold”.

Journal of Climate, 2000 13 pg1674-1696 Article on “Variability and trends in Antarctic surface temps from in situ and satellite infrared measurements” said “Both satellite data and ground stations show slight cooling over last 20 years”

Science magazine, 2002 295: 476-480 Article by Joghin and Tulaczk on “Positive mass balance of the Ross Ice Streams, West Antarctica” said “Side looking radar measurements show West Antarctic ice is increasing at 26.8 gigatons/ year reversing the melting trend of the last 6000 years”

Nature, 1999 399: 429-436 Petit, Jouzel, Raynard etc. Article on “Climate and atmospheric history of the past 420,000 years from the Vostok ice core, Antarctica” said “During the last 4 interglacials, going back 420,00 years, the Earth was warmer than it is today”.

Geology magazine, 1999 27: 179-182 Article by Anderson and Andrews on “Radiocarbon constraints on ice sheet advance and retreat in the Weddell Sea, Antarctica” stated “ Less Antarctic ice has melted today than occurred during the last interglacial”.

Geophysical Research Letters, 2004 31: 10.1029 Article by Liu, Curry and Martinson on “Interpretation of recent Antarctic sea ice variability” said ”Antarctic sea ice has increased since 1979”.

Annals of Glaciology 34: 435-440 C.L. Parkinson article on “Trends in the length of the southern Ocean sea-ice season, 1979-1999” said “The greater part of Antarctica experiences a longer sea-ice season, lasting 21 days longer than it did in 1979”.

Antarctica started melting 18,000 years ago at the peak of the last ice age and is predicted to continue to melt for the next 7,000 years.

What I find interesting is how the media doesn’t talk about this side of the issue. That’s because telling people everything is gonna be fine won’t sell newspapers.

Oh they'll sell their papers either way, it's their politics plain and simple.

Ya know, it would be really refreshing to see a few of you man made global warming guys concede that maybe, just maybe the US isn't to blame for all this.

I don't think anyone is blaming the US, that is why it is up to all the countries and all the people to do their best to help remedy the situation. That is why accords like Kyoto were not the US needs to do X but each country needs to do their share. The issue is some countries have decided they don’t have to and unfortunately our moron like yours has decided the same thing, to let others worry.

I am sure that the debate here is not so much whether global warming exists as to who or what is the cause.

the problem with that is that it misses some jkey points

1) it is true that earths temperature changes over eons and that there were colder/warmer times but the evidence also shows that temperature changes in the past took a long time to happen (degrees/centuries instead of degrees/years)

2) that continents and places move, that the earth wobbles.... so that some places that were warmer/colder were that way because they were different then now and you need to look at world temp and not (for example) was Antartic once warm. (it was, partially because it used to be in a more equatorial position)

3) that we know some things that cause the changes and we know that they are caused by us. so it becomes are we 90% responsible or 100% or 70% , so why not decrease the effect we have

4) we need to live on this planet, yes there where times when it was warmer/ colder and there were times when there were dinosaurs and mammoths, neither of which survived their climate changes.

I always seem to be defending the Republicans, which is
not my intent. I just want to get the facts straight.

This is a very complex issue, but basically American drug
companies are the ones that do all the R&D for new drugs.
They charge more for these to offset the cost of R&D.
Canada and other countries pick them up once they become
generic. Drug companies do not arbitrarily charge what
ever they want for drugs. They are in fierce competition
with each other. Other contributors to high health care
stem from insurance abuses and care for uninsured people
among other things. If your theoretical hybrid candidate
has a better plan I would be glad to here it.

Just like you do if you get a big contract for 200 homes. You go to the rep and say hey dealer cost is NOT going to work for me. I need something better. 9 times out of ten he comes back with another 5 to 10% off.

I am not saying the drug companies should not make a fair profit. But I think it is silly if you are going to be buying in bulk why make the rules say you can NOT talk for a better price? That is my gripe with the rules.

So, what's the ideal solution?

I don't know about this, but why is every Republican
initiative considered to be a complete failure if it's
not 100% perfect? Which when it comes to education is
impossible. Once again, if there's a better plan, I'd
like to hear.

A better plan would be competition. How about in place of me paying 300 a month to put my little girl in private school they give me the money. Public schools are lax cause they know that people have to pay out of there own pocket to put their kids in private school. A little competition goes a LONG way.

What would the governator do?

BTW Thanks to you guys that posted the funny links. It's
always good to keep it in perspective.

For the most part I sing the GOP line. There is a lot more stuff that I agree with on that side of the isle than the other. BUT..... as things is my life change, and OTHER facters come into play I have to deal with other issues. (Health Care being one of the main issues.) Funny how when you are in your twenties health care is not even close to being on your mind. a decade, and 2 kids later you tend to start to think about some of these things. Like the 2500 bill I got from the hospital and I HAVE health insurance! Wait a minute I have 2 different health insurance policies. Blue Cross from my wife and her work, and Tri-Care from the military. Why am I paying this bill??????

I can only imagine what this is going to cost me when I get out of the military.

I must say that this is a cool thread where people are able to say the stuff that we say and are nice about it. Pretty cool cats every one of you all.

Screw It... I saw a travel show on Australia last night (in between watching info-mercials ... The George Foreman Grille and some channel peddling really gaudy wristwatches)...
But this show on Australia was amazing! What a cool country!
Man Australia looks like it totally ROCKS!!!

I'm thinking of moving there and opening a discount - Bikini Waxing parlor down by one of the beaches!

Oh No. The secret's out!

Life's good over here.

But we are suffering from drought and up north we have just gone into level 5 water restrictions which means;

- no watering of lawns
- limited watering of gardens
- can only wash mirrors and windows on your car with bucket water
- no topping up of swimming pools
- no outdoor showers

Down south isn't much better, but life is still great.

Now when you open that Bikini Waxing parlor Stanley, make sure we still get your regular posts with all the details and photos, we want lots of photos....

It looks pretty good! Politically speaking you guys are pretty mellow too. I have heard Australia and New Zeland are both pretty cool places.

We almost moved to Australia when I was about 12, but my dad's job offer kind of fell through so we stayed up here which totally bummed me out...

I think I'll look into what it would cost to fly down there for a couple weeks. The beaches are pretty incredible.

But we are suffering from drought and up north we have

That sucks... But even up here in Seattle, we have had similar water shortages during some of our summers. Although we drown in rain most of the year, we rely upon the melting snow-packs up in our moutains for our water supply, and if we have a bad snow season up there, then it means water restrictions in the summer... Brown lawns, can't wash the car, limit shower times... which is OK with me, cause it means less yardwork, and the ex girlfriend couldn't demand that I wash her car, plus I could lounge around the house without showering!

Yeah, maybe I could publish via web cam, (for a fee of course) -- high definition video footage of the business... Of course it would all be fully suitable for family viewing. After all this IS Remote Central, and we can't offend the kiddies here now can we?!?!

Either that or I could wander the beaches and for a small fee, apply suntan lotion and give back rubs --- on beach massage! (Uh, ladys only of course).
