Do we have a list of brands that don't use discrete IR codes? I know some, like Samsung, have remotes that need to be paired to the TV because they use BT, but they still use IR. I sold a Sharp TV a few years ago and the lack of discretes is biting me on the ass as I type, so I don't want to repeat this experience.

Looking to get an LG or Samsung for a customer- what are the preferred brands, these days?

BTW- is XBox still the preferred gaming console?

LG and Samsung both have Discrete Power commands.

I would say the preferred brand these days is Sony, Discrete IR and almost bulletproof IP control

Not into gaming but I have always liked PlayStation over XBox but all depends on the games they want to play may determine what console they need.

1) You deserve what you get for selling a Sharp TV to begin with. Dear lord man!

2) Do NOT sell the entry level models of LG. For years now, the cheapest entry level LG TVs would sometimes NOT have discrete IR commands. There have been a few threads about this. The step up models are still very cheap (usually only 10-15% more than that entry level) and have discrete IR.

3) Game console and 'preferred'. That is an EXTREMELY bias statement. There is NOT a preferred console, as both do very well and have their following. With many people getting both. Plus there are always other entries from Nintendo to consider, gaming PCs hooked to A/V systems (more rare), and other niche offerings (Steam clients, etc.).

So since this is a beat down, kidding, Sony for TVs only. This makes issues like a lack of discreates go away. Sony has had the same power commands since the 80’s.
As for gaming i prefer Xbox. Then again i barley use it and it’s been months since it was even turned on.

Lighten up, Francis! I sold one Sharp and by the time the non-discrete commands became a problem, it was too late to return it.

How is a question about a preferred platform biasED? Am I being gamist? Sorry.

"Both"? Now, who's being biased? PlayStation, XBox and Nintendo makes three and I'm sure there are others but I don't play these games. The XBox they already have has had issues and he asked about replacing it. The son also has a Nintendo Switch, but I haven't found out how much he uses it, yet.

I agree with above comment(s) regarding the preferred gaming system will depend on the type of games one wants to play. Oftentimes this means having multiple consoles and a PC. That being said, every hard core gamer I know doesn’t use an Xbox, PlayStation or Nintendo; they all use a PC (I’m using that term for the gaming computer they have as I am naive about the details past that).

Back to the turd you maliciously sold your customer ;-)
One of our sales guys did that, it was either a Sharp or a Toshiba; I found that it would turn on via an input command so I made a work around with that. Hmmm maybe it was Hitachi. Worth a shot. Failing that maybe they are ready to buy a current “name brand”.

The better brands, Sony, Samsung, LG are pretty trustworthy. That being said, if you buy an entry-level in any one of those brands, you might get hosed. Brad says that is the case with LG, others have seen it with Sony and Samsung.

Better brands, models midline and up, that gives you your best chance.

I was on the horn with LG support because the photos on the websites for the distributor and LG show 3 HDMI inputs, but the description indicates four. He seemed to be unaware that universal remotes are used for this crap, too. I'm totally sick of people not knowing their damn products.

One of the models I'm considering is the LG 75UM7570PUD and none of their manuals show the correct number of HDMI ports.

I may start drinking again.

In the mean time, here's a song that I enjoy-

reddit showed a TV brochure a couple of weeks ago. A man, woman, and child were sitting on a couch watching TV. The picture was taken from a place in the room where you could see a bit of the back of the TV.
Two further renditions of the brochure zoomed in to show an IEC connector on the back of the TV. While the family was joyfully watching TV, there was no power cable connected to this TV.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Think all manufactures have low end models with less than 4 inputs and lacking discretes. Love Sony and have spent the last 4-5yrs pushing them first over Samsung and secondly over LG.

I had a client pick this up a couple weeks back, and though the AppleTV was not a graphics powerhouse, the gameplay and navigation were exceptional- [Link: steelseries.com] I think my daughter should have one of these and I wish I had grabbed one for Christmas break:/

Merry Christmas folks, may it be joyous and lack interruption from OvrC, Bakpak, Bluebolt, and the like.

My issue isn't with the number of inputs, it's in LG's inaccuracy that has been simply copied/pasted without anyone making sure that what they present is correct. We shouldn't need to proofread a manufacturer's information, but here we are.....

MANY years ago, the cabinet guy used Mitsubishi published specs to build out the family room cabinet, with a lazy susan type thing to rotate the 35” tube TV.

Imagine our surprise when it was too tall to fit into the cabinet. Had to remove the rotating shelf to slide the TV in.

If you looking for Cheap TV. GO with TCL discrete for everything. IP command works great, with discrete for any app. This is my go-to if Client wants a cheap TV. I have 2 in my house working on WIF and hardwire and work great!
