As far as the IR, is that the horizontal window on the bottom front of the unit vs the back? Seems silly if designed for a rack/integrators being on the front.

It will receive IR from the front, but there's also a recessed channel on the bottom where you can stick the emitter so it's hidden and run the wire out the back.

What’s most upsetting is that none of the traditional custom electronics and audio companies have come up with anything better. They try but dont come close. People are going to embrace Sonos because it works, regardless if the fact that margins are low. Sad to say, I feel like I do customers a disservice if I am providing them a Sonos alternative. I’ve vowed not to install anything other than Sonos for streaming music services. Other companies please come up with something better if you want to stay relevant.

We've done a couple MusicCast jobs and it is way more flexible than Sonos. After the second job I realised what a turd Sonos is.

So I just read Julie's article. I clearly don't understand what rack mounting means; in my world, it means that the unit comes with ears that can be attached or not, as required, and not buy a custom face plate. Julie, could you explain to me about this, please?

Hi Fred, the unit is not directly rack mountable.  For starters it's 1.5U high which already throws a wrench in things.  The units can be stacked directly on top of each other (I think up to 3 units high).  Sonos has been working with Middle Atlantic, Flexson and I think Sanus for rack mount & wall mount solutions.  Most of my projects are racked, but some of the wall mount solutions they showed at training looked slick.

Looks like little rubber spacers stacked... Middle Atlantic is still working with Sonos to finalize RSH shelves for the new amp so any photos you see are likely pre-production examples.

I did one MusicCast installation. Spotify connect only so when customer wants to group multiple rooms they have to do it with the music cast app then switch to Spotify app to search and control music. It was embarrassing trying to explain it to them. Hopefully they don’t have friends that have Sonos.

Looks like current Airport expresses have been upgraded to Handle Airplay 2. If people are gung ho about non Sonos products that don't support Apple Music or Spotify within the app they should consider Airplay 2 devices everywhere. I'd be happy to start playing a song on iPhone then sending it to multiple speakers or amps. Does anyone know if multiple volume controls show up on iOs devices when multiple speakers are selected? To me this would be better than dealing with the other third party apps that can't deal with aggregating prominent music services ino their app.

Only down side is the music streams from the phone. Or does Airplay 2 allow speakers to stream music services directly from the internet like Chromecast does for movies or Spotify Connect for songs?

Our company is moving quickly over to Musicast. It is built into our Yamaha receivers and will work with Elan, and sounds good.

These are of particular interest... anyone going to CEDIA who can look into them and see how they stack up?

isnt the having to use the Spotify app an issue from Spotify themselves? They are forcing everyone to do that if they want Spotify on their products.

If our clients are streaming Spotify then they deal with it, and so far no complaints. If they did complain about a kludgey Spotify app I would direct them to complain to Spotify for having an app that sucks. To blame a shitty app on another app which works perfectly fine is retarded.

You guys will be seeing the new line up of Sonos killers in about a week.  They've been showing them to us for a decade now.

One way to solve it is to use a product called Sonos. They support Spotify and Apple Music inside their app so you never have to go back and forth between two apps, which is confusing to my old, wealthy customers who are low tech kind of people.

If that's literally true, then two of them on a rack shelf require 3U, as the shelf always takes up some height.
The units can be stacked directly on top of each other (I think up to 3 units high).

Which would then be 5U.

I am looking forward to seeing all the killers out there again this year. I wonder how much market share they have actually taken from Sonos?
