After frustrating experience with Xantech ir232 - it needs win xp! - I found a great product to convert IR to RS 232.. I am not sure if this would work with other brands as well but it works great with Sony codes.. Something about SIRC that I don't know anything about..

I have been using it and it works perfectly, to control my wolf cinema dcx1000i projector.
I can't believe that projector manufacturers are so stupid to not give us discrete on/off codes (thanks Christie Digital!). Even Sony did not give the option on the remotes. What is the matter with these idiots? Has no one heard of universal remotes?

Anyway, my frustration has been solved, thanks to Gary Peek at Industrologic.com

Here is the IR to rs232 product:

[Link: industrologic.com]
Only $79 + $10 for cover + 10 for usb to rs232. You will probably need to order a null modem and a Gender changer.. Typical rs232 cable will need a gender changer!

Programming is very easy - but only if you talk to them. It is not easy to program, reading the instructions. I wish they would put better instructions but Gary Peek at indstrologic was extremely helpful. He asked me to send him the rs232 info manual on my projector.. he read it and emailed me his suggestions! He went out of his way for this.. and I appreciate it very much. He told me to make sure I change my projector settings to 9800 baud.

Below are my own notes (not the best instructions, I admit!).

Connect the rs232 box to your computer.. make sure you know the com port number!
run the program: term232 program (it is in the CD or can be downloaded from industrologic.com )
hit esc 3 times
you will see cmd>

point remote at the box.- Only sony remote and press any button

I programmed URC for Sony (1) LD power on/off using urc database.

hit the button on remote, while pointing it to the device and
it will show device code =6 function = 46 SONY LASER DISC POWER BUTTONS ARE 46 for ON AND 47 FOR OFF
type the following:
cmd> M1=6,46,(PWR 1) THIS WILL PROGRAM THE ASCI CODE (PWR 1) INTO M1
CMD> M2=6,47,(PWR 0) WILL PROGRAM it INTO M2

now Sony LD on IR code will send (PWR 1) via rs232 to my Wolf Cinema dcx1000i projector.
It is working flawlessly!

Alternately, to test, you can connect a computer via rs232 directly to the projector and type out commands and it should react to your commands.

When most of us here were using that, Bill Clinton wasn't having sex with that woman. A path to happiness would be:

A) visit Target
B) download Sonos app
C) while at Target, pickup Amy's organic bean burritos. Only the finest.

I don't think I've ever encountered a projector that didn't have discrete IR power commands. You just have to know where to find them. Like for example, any remote control programming software.

Isn't a Wolf Cinema projector just a JVC in a fancy box?

JVC has discrete on/off.

Um just because the remote doesn't have discrete buttons doesn't mean the device won't respond to discrete commands.

Usually with Xantech, to program one of their products, you needed all sorts of other Xantech boxes, adapters, special remote controls, cables and adapters. I might have a CD-ROM of the software if your PC has one of those cupholder things to put it into.

I think this was discussed during the previous year and we had all sorts of comments until some innocent soul pointed out that the kinds of commands presented to a device via RS-232 are wholly unrelated to the commands presented via IR. That is, they cannot be translated from one style to another.

What CAN work, and what I believe is discussed here, is a method of taking a known set of IR commands and a known set of RS232 commands, and creating a chart that correlates the two sets of commands.

That is, you hit IR command 14 and it gives you the RS232 command for 14. It totally depends on someone having worked all this out beforehand.

What this seems to be, from the beginning of the thread, is the promise that if you have an IR controller, this device can spit out the RS232 command that is the equivalent of any IR command you send to it. It's not.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Hi David. I looked for the CD-ROM but I couldn't find it. I'm sure I tossed it because I had no more need for it. I think I sold my old Xantech programming remote on eBay around the same time.

Thanks for looking, I gave up on it... I'll dump mine back on ebay, I hope I can get out of it what I put into it... (I didn't pay much but, still I need to make a profit, even if it is 0.25)

Ordered a ocelot controller for a really good price.

This sounds rather odd. Your time is worth something and that can be expressed in dollars and cents. If, right now, you put this thing in the trash and can bring yourself never to think of it again, how many minutes or hours of your life will you not waste thinking about it again?

A whole lot more than a quarter's worth. And more than the thing is worth.

Profit by stopping loss.
