Setup google alerts for your name and company name and respond to anything he posts about you with the full story and leave out any emotion. Just the facts.

People who read reviews will figure him out pretty quick.

Best advice in my opinion

Take it from a non-practicing lawyer he is attempting to extort money from you. I agree you should address his negative post on AL if he posts but I would post a question on the website, above, and email Angie at AL and incluse copies of his threats.

Please tell me you have a clause in your contract that states you are not responsible for the veracity of customer provided equipment...

I would all the above mentioned, but also file a police report. This guy probably scams people this way all the time and no one reports him. What he sent you is indeed a threat and in most states is an arrest able offense.

Thats Bobcat Goldthwaits movie. I watched it recently, its decent. The chick pulling out her tampon and throwing it at the other skank is the best part of the whole movie.

I went thru something like this with bbb. A biz partner before I joined the company hung a tv and there painters took it down and put it back up . Then she said it was leaning and going to fall off the wall . She call him at 5pm. He calls back no answer gets a hold off her at 2pm next day and she told him she had somebody else fix it and she was sending a bill . It was for $200 . We asked her to send us the invoice and we would pay the company . She said no and call bbb on us . They told us even if we were right we would have to pay or suffer.

I would just call up agies list and kill them with kindness so when he contacts them all mad they side with you.

I had a similar thing happen to me about 2 years ago with a customer from SM. He bought some cheap cameras on Ebay and had us install them.  6 months later one of them died, I came out at no charge to him, diagnosed the problem. Told him to send the camera back.

He gets the new camera, calls me to install it, and I told him that I'd do it at the regular hourly rate.  He didn't like that and left a Bullsh@t rating on SM.  The minute I saw it I called SM.  They basically told me I was screwed. They told me  I could respond to his review and that was that.

They said I could try and contact him to resolve the issue, I told them that there's no way I was going to call him and get extorted for labor, because there is NO issue with my installation, it was crap product that I didn't provide.

SM said they would investigate it, and in the meantime, they'd remove the review temporarily.  30 days later it popped up again, I called again.  They said they couldn't get in contact with the customer, he wouldn't return messages so they re-instated his review.  Wha?

In a nutshell, I told them if they didn't remove it immediately, I was going to cancel my account.  At that point, I had a rep turn my account off until until they got it resolved.  Oddly, that took less than 24 hrs.

I completely agree with you though, they really do have you by the shorthairs with those reviews. The rep told me, one of the reasons they removed it was because of the vast majority of our ratings were 5 stars.

I wonder if the time you go back for free , if you don't expressly tell them it's free . And when they try something like this you could send them a bill for a service and then tell sm or angies. List they didn't pay there bill and that is what the real issue is.

I have a guy that owes me money and won't return my calls, job is 98% finished and I've made almost every attempt to reach him short of going to his work or showing up at his house in an evening or on a weekend.

My lawyer is out of town, waiting for him to get back and write a letter, in the meantime I'd love to point an AK47 at the guy, he's a little prick, just to see him cry.

I feel for you Brendon, good luck with this douche.

OT...RE:Not getting paid & AK47...

Do what you can to structure payment so that you are never upside down enough to care. The best way to do that is to make "programming and configuration" the final stage of the project. Make sure all hardware and labor has been paid for and then begin the final stage.

This should guarantee that the only thing owed to you is labor for "bringing the system online". If the client refuses to pay you for this once you are done...awesome. You never have to spend another dollar supporting the system.

Adding... this system also keeps the CI honest. The clients install is done and every part has been ordered and connected. Client doesn't have to worry about the CI never finishing the project.

We've had this happen before. A previous customer posted something completely untrue on Yelp and it almost cost us a $100k electrical job and a $100k AV project (same customer). After an hour into the walk thru he asked about it and told us they were considering using someone else. Anyone with a keyboard can potentially ruin our reputation nowadays! The best thing you can do is a follow up with every customer at the end of the project. Make them sign a "satistified with service" document which has some legal verbage that they cannot slander you after the work is done. I personally do not do that yet but need to implement it sooner than later. Your situation is a little different and truely sucks. Contact your lawyer! Good luck and don't give in!

One thing I'd like to add.  Since my issue with that client, I started requiring all techs and clients to fill out a satisfaction survey before the techs leave.  I actually used a white paper from CEPro for the template.

It includes everything from wire "neat and tidy" to screens cleaned, internet functional, blah blah blah.

Maybe put one together for yourself...that way if something like this happens again, you have a signed document that he was happy when you left.

It takes an extra 10-15 minutes at the end, but it covers your ass.  It's amazing how big people's balls get on the phone or online, but when you are standing in front of them they're nice as pie.

F Yelp. We have 3 negative reviews (1 a competitor shill) and 6 five star reviews for the bar. All 6 five star reviews were filtered off. To view them you have to enter a capcha phrase, hop on one foot and pass a field sobriety check before yelp will show them to you.

When asked why Yelp responds with the reviews are filtered by the computer because they came from accounts that are "too new".

However, the "too new" accounts that left negative reviews remain.

Unless I want to advertise of course.

I tell people to leave us a 1 star review and leave their positive review in the text.

I don't know much about companies like this but it might be worth looking into.

www.reputation.com

I've always found sites like Angie's List, Yelp, even the BBB to be complete B.S. They're nothing but paid advertisements.

I really wish there was a site for trades like us to report our customers (both good and bad.) You, me, Joe the plumber etc. can check out a customer before we commit to them. Turning the tables and covering our asses.

Lastly, we set our systems in all ch stereo by default..... Give the people what they want!
