Was finishing up a job, testing, programming the remote, and the BluRay was acting strange and giving an error message of U73.

Here is the equipment: Panasonic DMP-BD60, Denon AVR1910,Dish VIP722K sat receiver, Samsung LED 42" not sure the exact model. All are switched through the AVR. HDMI connected and one HDMI to the display.

Here is what happens: The sat plays fine, no issues. The BD will load the disc and you can see the numbers moving on the display until you switch the input on the AVR, then it kinda stutters and shows the message U73 on the BD display. If you switch the AVR input back to sat, the sat plays fine, and the BD display reverts to the word PLAY, but doesn't seem to be playing. I switched the input on the AVR from dvd to hdp thinking that could be the problem but it didn't change anything. At no time does any picture from the BD show on the display, not even a menu or logo.

I had to be somewhere else the next day, was waiting on a couple of volume controls to come in, so I re-scheduled after making sure they had sat, and I need to get back to do an in-depth troubleshooting. I will bypass the AVR with component to see if I get a picture, try to do a firmware update etc. The thing that is throwing me the most is the player running until I switch the input on the AVR. I could understand if the error message showed up immediately, but it you switch the input and turn off/on the player, the message goes away (until you switch the input again). Also, I didn't have a BD disc to test it, and neither did the customer(they are new to this) and only had a SD disc to run.

I am just looking for any insight before I go back that will possibly make the troubleshooting faster or more productive. Anyone hear of a similar problem before?

Thanks in advance.

GLS, you did not mention what HDMI made and model you are you using. There are multi factors that cause the hand sake process fail.

1. Cost saving HDMI cables
2. If you have not do the search on this forum or other AV related forumss: Panasonic Blu-ray player and Denon AVR are a FATAL match. At least to my experience.

If you check the Panasonic BD manual there is a a message about the U73 error that suggests trying another HDMI cable.
Those players have known compatibility issues as Indigo indicated.

Common problem with the Pannys.  Also check to make sure you have the latest firmware.

Replace the Panasonic, they're problematic and will not work if you have HDMI baluns in the video path. It seems that Panasonic decided to save money on the HDMI side of things on their new BD series players (resulting in sketchy EDIC voltages). The HDMI cables have to be of good to very good quality for the player to work. You could use an Ethereal DAD, but that's almost the price of the player.

The new Panasonic BD players are not like the old S77 that a lot of us used and loved.

I think FRR and scottedge mean replace the Panasonic with a different brand, right? Not get a different one of the same model Panasonic....
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

yes different brand. I recommend LG BD390 its a nice unit. Second Samsung 1600/3600 or if you want a nicer unit the Oppo. Weren't you looking to get a player? What did you end up with?

yes different brand, I was lazy and if the OP did even a simple search he would see that the Panasonics are problematic. I've seen that exact error on this board several times.

Go on the LG.
OTOH, The Samsung has been 80+% of my tech calls in the past two months.
They do not like long cable runs or baluns.

Got this email this morning:

" Jeff, the DMPBD80K Blu-ray’s are gone.. they are tied to orders from a few days ago, and will be coming off our website any day- "

That worked in my favor!

I ordered some Onkyo DV-BD507s.
Any feedback on these players?

Thanks everyone for the feedback. It has been hectic (for the first time in over a year) and I can't really type a long post from the Iphone, which is how I do most of my reading on this site. So I had to wait until I could get to the laptop.

The Panny was existing because the customer got it and the TV at "you know where." BB. The cable is something they got from BB, it is only 6ft long, didn't think I was going to have a problem with it. The cables I supplied, to the display and the sat box, are the Black Bull from Key Digital. Don't know if they are considered "high end" or not, they seem to be okay. When I run cables in the wall, I use the Snap ones because they are CL rated.

I usually spec Samsung BD, and the 2500, 3500's I've used haven't given me any problems, but maybe I need to look into the LG's if they are getting high marks here. I did like that the Panny had discrete on/off though. Does the LG?
Does the LG stream Netflicks or Pandora? I like that about the Sammy's.

I am waiting for parts to arrive and will be back tomorrow to finish and troubleshoot. I will change cables and do a firmware update. Yes I should have searched, but I tend to default to asking first. I didn't think that it was a common problem, and I want up to date info/feedback.

Thanks again. Happy Holidays All!
