and that proves what? That you can pay for a class and get some certification that means nothing? Just because you can sit through a class and answer the questions correctly at the end does not qualify you to do anything. I brought a girlfriend to one of the above mentioned classes who knows nothing about this industry and she was able to get certified along with me and she is a car salesperson.

it proves that no matter how you may feel, i am doing what it takes to better me and therefore my company. my cedia certification i guarantee cant be obtained by just anyone. the test is difficult and is well suited for someone with a few years experience. my HAA and ISF allows me the use of their website, logo, and trainings, which give the ability to offer my clients a higher level of service and still keep it in house. there is great money and customer satisfactio in calibrations. the cedia designer cert., IMO, is a great step into the next level of theater design and setup, it will be for my own personal advancement. and the "green" trainings will allow me to keep up with the needs and desires of our ever changing industry.

i understand that it easy to sit back and say that certifications and trainigs are useless, WHEN YOU DON'T HAVE THEM. instead of feeling outpaced, you should go get the certs and trainings, they are a real good investment, and even you may hear something you dont already know. the only thing in this world that you can earn and cant ever be taken away from you is your education. Never stop learning.

So how do you learn stuff? Seriously.

These manufacturer-neutral classes, IMO, would be better than the free sales seminars/glorified commercials. Of course, a lot depends on the instructor.

You paid to have your girlfriend attend a class with you? I wouldn't be able to pay attention, if I was with a girlfriend.

Just wanted to post that some folks from Lutron started a message board to keep you up to date on the new products and software releases. It can be found at http://ra-volution.proboards.com/

This board just went up September 1 so there will be more content being put up pretty quickly.

If you calm down and think about it the point is that a certification, like a drivers license or a college degree is merely a statement of minimum proficiency. If you have an ISF but only perform a few calibrations a year, who will be more proficient, you, with your 5 or 6 calibrations ( an example, not a prediction or statement of fact ) or someone who does 4-5 per week?

Education is always good. But not everyone with a degree is of equal abilities nor does it necessarily mean proficiency. In some cases, a certification can be so easy that someone with a brain, but who's not part of the industry can pass it.

At best a certification means minimum proficiency. You have a driver's license. Does that mean you can back a 18 wheeler into a loading dock or drive at Daytona?

You're former military. Who'd you prefer leading a combat patrol? A first lieutenant just out of the Academy or a 20 year First Sergeant? Point is that education is good; experience is better. The First Sergeant has done it and done it again. He proved it all night.

If you calm down...

Valid argument, but he's probably pretty calm now, after a year. ;)
