Hi everyone,

I've recently purchased a TSU 9600 on ebay. After uploading some screens from pronto edit into the device, I've noticed the screen wasn't responding as expected. The hard buttons all work, but only the first press on the screen is registered. If I try pressing it again, nothing happens, but the hard buttons still work.

I've done a full firmware reload (as explained in this thread: [Link: remotecentral.com] ) and the problem is still there. After a reset, once the calibration screen appears, I can tap the first crosshair but then the screen doesn't respond anymore. It's the same symptom as what this person experienced in this thread, from 2007: [Link: remotecentral.com]

Does anyone have a suggestion as to what I could do to repair it myself ? Or is it a useless brick ?

I recommend sending for repair to www.servicewidetech.com. You can open it up but not at liberty to provide full set of instructions on how to do this at this time.

Thanks for your reply, that's what I was expecting... Unfortunately, it would cost more to have it sent and fixed than what I actually paid for it (I live in France).

Can this kind of defect happen while being shipped ? Or is it more plausible that the seller is just pretending it was working before sending it ?

Could be from a very rough shipment but could be the case where not working when shipped. I would suggest the shipper vs the seller.

Contact Fabrice at pilotefilms.com and see if they might open up the unit and reseat the cables for you. If anything else, they likely will not service it.

It was quite nicely packed, so I'm surprised this kind of thing could happen.

Thank you for your help, I've contacted Fabrice and am now waiting for his answer. Hopefully I won't have to tear it apart and poke at it at random or sell it back on ebay for just a few dollars (with the mention of its needing repair, obviously).

Interestingly, the touchscreen on my TSU9600 that I've for about 1.5 years just stopped responding an hour ago. The buttons all work fine and the communication to the RFX extender is fine.
After reading this post I've re-flashed the firmware (Version 7.4.22-1.5.20) with no change. Then I flashed the older version in the file section (7.3.3-1.4.5) and still no change.
I believe Lyndel mentioned re-seating the internal connections. Is this something I could do? I replaced the battery 6 months ago, so I can remove the rear cover. Or is there any place someone could recommend locally or nearby that could do the work? I am located in Las Vegas, NV.

Also the screen no longer turns off automatically.

www.servicewidetech.com

If you replaced the battery then you are halfway there. You must separate the halves of the remote such that you can get to the connectors that are underneath the docking board. You must do this very carefully to prevent breaking any clips. My recommendation would be to send in for service unless you have correct plastic separation tools, etc...

Thanks for the hint Lyndel.
I got it apart successfully, but unfortunately re-seating the ribbon cable for the touch panel did no good. I may take it apart again and open the screen itself to re-seat that cable as well, before having it serviced, I don't know.
Oh well, I've emailed ServiceWideTech to make sure they'll service it as I don't think I have the receipt anymore.
It's almost worth thinking about getting a tablet and making that into the system controller. If I go that route I'll have a pristine RFX unit available.

Thanks again for your help Lyndel.
I'm still using your DVD library concepts for all my movies that aren't on the hard drives yet. :-) (Whoops, I forgot that it was LowPro who was the DVD Library maestro, you've helped me with batteries in the past though))

I'll keep that in mind Lyndel. Haven't made any decisions yet. I've always loved the Pronto series and may get another one, have the bad one repaired and keep it as a backup. Going to try re-seating the ribbon cable on the screen itself first.

Hi Tamvagus

To replace the touch screen you need to replace the whole of the front plastic moulding, which could be an issue if you have a Mk1 9600 with a plastic scroll wheel, as philips only hold stock of the upgarde kit now which is a Front panel, new Metal scroll wheel, new PCB.

Thanks goPronto, I do have a Mark 1 (plastic wheel).
Reseating everything did nothing. So either it's off to the repair techs or change to an Android based system ( I have an extra Samsung Epic that will work well).
Still researching if there are any Android based programs with customization on a par with Pronto.

I haven't received a single reply from anyone at pilotefilms. So I might just try and reseat the cables myself. Unfortunately, after opening up the case as I'd already done to replace the battery, I couldn't find out how to properly remove the rest of the case to access those cables.

Could anyone please send me the service manual (I really only need the part about opening the case), or explain how to do it ?
