For those interested... my config is now available for download in the files section.

Note: You need to install the supplied fonts in order to have it display correctly. ProntoEdit will substitute any missing fonts with the default 'Pronto Maestro' and if you happen to save the file after this, you will have to manually replace all the affected buttons, text fields, etc... which is not fun. Unfortunately, I speak from experience.

Hope this helps for those who lost the ability to stream weather info.

Scott

Note to Daniel: I tried to use the 'Insert link' button, but was not working for me. Just get a blank dialog box and no way to exit... freezes that window up. Not sure if anyone else is having this issue. Using IE 9 with Windows 7.

Scott, very nice work. Your project is insipring. It also helped me get out of my 5 day ratt hole using the getHTTPXML(), XML and accessing properties (which was my problem work) and accuweather.coms' service.

What was used to create the UI graphics and how much pronto experience did you have prior to rebuilding the UI? Just curious on the time/ramp up investment for building something professional like that on my own (I can write code, but I suck at UI work!).

thanks for sharing!

Hi Joelz,

I'm glad you like the UI. I have been playing with Pronto and Marantz remotes for over 10 years now. My first submission to this site was for the Marantz RC5000i back in 2001.

I created all the graphics in Photoshop. Most icons are originally 600x600 pixels at a resolution of 300 dpi... perhaps a little overkill, but can easiy be scaled down without losing quality because it is vector based graphics.

The UI work takes a long time... especially since I am not a graphics artist by trade... strictly a hobby. Plus I do this in my free time... which these days has dwindled down to almost none (2 small children - 2 1/2 years and 6 months). The UI work will take at least as much time, if not more so than the programming. I've been slowly working on this interface over the last couple of years... still lots more to do. As you can see, I am still playing around with the look of the basic buttons (there are currently a few styles in there... will probably be reduced to one or two types... once I decide on a look I like. Some are simply scaled inside the Pronto program and look a little squished or stretched. These will be properly scaled in Photoshop when I get the time.

The overall look and feel of the layout has matured over the years into something that I believe is an intuitive, easy to see and simple layout. If there are too many buttons that are cluttered and small, the interface becomes difficult to use. The ultimate test was whether my wife could use the remote easily without getting lost. It is not perfect right now, but it is the best design that I have come up with yet... there is always room for improvement! The most importatnt thing is to not be afraid to try new things and have fun with it. Chip away at it slowly over time, set realistic goals so you don't feel too overwhelmed. Also, there is always help available at these forums... lots of very knowledgeable people here. This site has helped me tremendously over the years.

Let me know if you have any other questions with regards to the layout or help with Photoshop.

Best of luck,
Scott

I sent you an Rc mail about this but was wondering if there is a way to get the weather to work with a 24hr format? The weather on the splash screen works fine but not the actual weather activity. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks, Danny

Hi quagmire,

Got your PM regarding this. I will look into it this week. I have a pretty good idea what the issue is. I have to admit I never really tested the weather activity with the 24hr time format... just the front end. I will re-submit the file here when it is complete and send you a PM.

Hi,

Has anyone resized Scott module to a 9400 yet. If so, would you mind sharing?

Thanks, Willieneal

I have sent you a PM with the new coding to make the weather module work with the 24 hour time format. Let me know if you have any issues.

Could you also send me the new coding ?
I also need the 24 hour time format, because I live in Germany.

Best regards

Come on now. What's so special about Germany? Don't 24 hour clocks also have to include the 12 hour clock? :-)

Hi Fischi,

I have sent you a PM with the fix as well. I will upload the new file to remote central as soon as I can.

Hi all,

A lot of time has passed since Scott's xcf has been posted to the forum and on my 9600 the weather updates no longer work. I'm not very proficient with javascript so coding for me is a challenge, but I'm all about trying.

I've looked for other xml feeds that I could use, but can't find any. Strangely, Scott's xcf did work here about 2 months ago, then stopped completely. I suspect my IP address took a while before it was denied access to the xml data.

Does anyone have updated code they can provide me, or at the very least a suitable xml feed that I can access??

Thanks in advance

I just finished a weather module for the iPad running commandFusion. It is posted on my web site. While it will not run on a Pronto as is, all of the work is done in JavaScript so a port to the Pronto should not be to bad. You would need to redo/rescale the graphics (which are all png files), change the way a http command is sent and how the reply is assimilated. All of the code to parse the reply, set the text strings and show the graphics should be highly useable.

The weather data is all obtained from wunderground.com using their free developer key. I retrieve astronomy (sunset, sunrise) current conditions, and a 10 day forecast. The call is very simple and everything is extremely well documented. They describe everything that comes back. Basically the http string sent has the registered key, the format to return and the locator which can be a zipcode (that is what I use), state/city, or some international identifier.

The thing I like most is that as part of the call you specify the format of the reply. They allow for RSS, XML, JSON. The code I developed uses JSON, as a JSON formatted text string becomes a Full JavaScript object with a simple parse.JSON command in javascript. Once you have a true JavaScript object all the data appears as name value pairs so retrieval is trivial.

The reason I am posting this hear is to recommend wunderground.com as an excellent source of accurate up to the minute weather data.
