Philips explained on the Beta Forum that WPA was a rather
chatty protocol and caused large decrease in battery life.
They are investigating possibilities but WPA at this
time was not battery-effective.

When I first read this, my reaction was oh, well, sounds reasonable. But my opinion has changed over the past couple weeks.

I really do think this is an unreasonable excuse. The iPhone and some other cellphones have implemented WPA (and even WPA2 in some cases) and are managing battery life with a much lower capacity battery. So something just doesn't jibe here.

I agree. I stared a thread on security and after receiving advice from others here I've gone out and bought another wireless router and established 2 separate networks. One WEP enabled just for the RF9600 extender only - not connected to any PC. And the other WPA enabled for all the computers in the house to keep my data safe.

This is ridiculous.

Right. Your thread is a good part of what made me reconsider as I started thinking about doing the same thing. It's silly to expect customers to have two wireless networks and them go through extra steps to lock the insecure one down.

As if WPA is that more secure, it's both crap. If anyone takes 2 minutes to crack WEP, why won't he take the extra 8 minutes to crack WPA?

Where'd you get that from? AFAIK, no one has cracked WPA, especially if a well chosen key is used.
