Prepare for a PDA spanking...
Nevo will not pass the mustard with the Pronto Pro guys and since TV Remote is Still a few versions away from being perfect, we will get spanked.

I can't wait for them to try to justify the money for the pronto pro with obsolete hardware (512K, slow processor, old-school crap display, RS232, .....) compared to the Ipaq with active matrix display, thousands of colors, world's fastest/most efficient portable processor, wireless cabability and expandable memory. Of course they'll probably try to convince everyone that it's not about the hardware. Sure, the Nevo version 1 software will likely dissappoint programmers, but what about all the other complementary applications the device will do (TV guide listings, music database, wireless web browsing, etc...)? I'll take the bet that Nevo has a fully customizable version of their software long before Pronto does anything but remote control.

It's too bad that the software that is going to be reviewed is not Onnniremote Pro.
The combination of Omniremote Pro and one of the Sony
Clie pdas with the enhanced ir strength just blows away the Pronto Pro.
The reasons I say this:
1)Omniremote Pro is FAR superior to the Pronto Edit in terms of being user friendly.
I been reading the horror stories of the learning curve of Pronto Edit for years in the Pronto forum.
2)Superior screen displays on the Sony Clies.
3)Superior battery.Again I base this on the posts in the Pronto forum about the problems with the battery charger for the Pronto.
4)Price.NOT EVEN CLOSE.The Sony 615 is selling on E-BAY for about $260 with about $100 worth of bonus software included for that price.
5)And the biggest advantage of all,the thousands of programs that a Palm based pda can run that a Pronto can not. This includes the free SecondScreenTV
software, which is a real plus for to have a URC.

If proper software was made for the Ipaq 3900 series it would be a clear winner but without it the Pronto Pro is still a strong contender, because of it's software, hard buttons and Ir range. Dont get me wrong, in terms of hardware a (long range Ir) equiped PDA is vastly superior but software is our biggest problem, "TV Remote" is a long way off from being the Pronto Killer that it could be.

PDA-ir, a CF module that works with TV Remote software, solves the IR range problem.

High everyone,

The CF PDA-ir only works on the Ipaq though........cant see the reason why it doesnt work on the Jornada 568....thought all the PPC2002 handhelds were supposed to be standard???

Is it the TV remote software that does not "recognise" the card...........seems a shame if so.........surely it would be a relatively easy fix?? Aftre all.......there are not just Ipaq owners out there who would like to use their handhelds as remotes and to take advantage of the increased IR strength that the CF IR extender has to offer.

Andrew,

I was afraid it would not work on the 568. I'm sure EDV (or Laser if you are in the UK) will give you a credit if you return it.

It's the TV Remote Control software that is the problem here. PDAwin is working on adding support for PDA-ir on the 568 as well on other PDAs.

Unfortunately, there is little standardization in this area. As I understand it, each PDA maps the pins on the CF slot to different MCU registers. The software has to be able to recognize the PDA and know the mapping scheme. And not all of the CF pins are mapped through on PCMCIA-CF adapters so a native CF slot is required.

Even the various iPAQ models differ in this regard. The first release of TV Remote that supported PDA-ir would not work on the 37xx series. PDAwin was able to fix this quickly but the documentation is much better for the iPAQs than for some other PDAs.

We also are eager to see software that supports the Audiovox Maestro, Toshiba e740 and other PPC2002 platforms.

There is someone looking into supporting PDA-ir on the Sharp Zaurus, HandEra 330, and any Visor with a Springport-to-CF adapter.

Thanks Dave.....
Yes I too was suspected that it would not work on the 568 (even though it was mentioned on the web site).....however I intend to hang onto the card until either a) pdawin supports the PDA-ir on the 568 or...
b) I decide to purchase a compaq Ipaq to use solely as a remote.

The 568 is my device but I want to have the software on it so that I can play around with CCF's etc....but since I was originally going to purchase a Pronto Pro the expense of an Ipaq is not really an issue.....even if it used for as a remote for most of the time.

Here in the UK the 38xx series has started to be discounted now that the new 39xx series has just been released.

What I would really like to know is whether the new TV Remote v5.0 makes use of the IR emitter in the same way as the Nevo software. At the moment this is unclear....I have tried e-mailing pdawin but as of yet I have not had a reply........am not holding my breath either.

Regards,

Andrew

IN the USA you can still find the discontinued H3635 for about $325-350. That's what I use.

Not a bad review, it was very fair!
This kind of review has got to have all the remote manufacters wondering what the future holds.
