Strengths:Eacellent device compatibility, easy to program, backlit display, concise instructions.
Weaknesses:Requires 4 AAA batteries
Review:I have only owned this remote for 24 hours, but already I'm in love with it. I originallly was going to buy the cheaper non-programmable model but Best Buy didn't have it so I picked this ine instead. I'm glad I spent the extra $20 on it. This is perhaps the best value universal remote out there. Out of the box it was able to control my TV, VCR, DSS, DVD and Receiver. The well written manual was able to guide me through the codes I needed to enter and they work flawlessly with my components. It did take me a few attempts to get the learning feture to work the way I wanted it to but after I got the hang of it I was able to program the few functions that the codes didn't have. This remote has so many different functions most people won't use them all. You can lock the voulme keys so it controls the TV no matter what mode you're in. You can move keys, group them together in a home theater mode, and assign macros for multiple functions. There is a sufficient number of keys and they are well placed. I can't speak for the range since all my components are within 10 feet and straight ahead. All in all I couldn't be happier, I have effectively replaced 5 remotes with 1 and haven't lost much in functionality.

Strengths:Controls 8 devices, has JP1 connector, nice backlight, upgradable.
Weaknesses:Setup button is recessed - makes it hard to use it as a "shift" key. Remote is big, heavy and poorly balanced. Poor button placement.
Review:I bought this remote to replace my trusty URC-7800. At first I liked the remote because it had codes for all my stuff and had room for a lot of macros. Then I discovered the JP1 Yahoo group and this unit now sits in a drawer because my 7800 can do all this remote does and more. The remote seems clunky and the hard "disk" navigation button is small and akward to use.

Review 2 made on Sunday February 9, 2003 at 12:19 PM.
Strengths:This remote can be upgraded over the telephone by dialing customer support. It has a JP1 connector and had enough memory for my learning requirements.
Volume Lock feature.
Weaknesses:Disk shaped cursor controls.
Select button.
Review:Customer support is not a toll-free number.
The most dissappointing item on this remote is the disk shaped cursor controls and select button. The pressure required to operate these buttons is inconsistent. Also the up position on the cursor control is too close to the power button.
Also, while in the Home Theater mode, the power keys will not control the assigned devices.
The Volume Lock feature is very handy for locking the volume controls to your audio amplifier regardless of what device has been selected to control.

Strengths:If the remote doesn't support your component model, you can call customer support and download it to your remote by putting the phone up the the remote!!! probably the coolest use of technology I have seen in a while.
Weaknesses:Not all the features are supported by the remote. But the most commonly used features are used. "AAA" batteries instead of "AA" is kind of annoying.
Review:- Over all it's upgradability and customer support seems to be it's strongest points. It didn't originally work with my Harman Kardon reciever, but I called them and within 10 minuits, it was up and running.
- There are four learning buttons per component. for a total of 32, but it is not a fully learning remote.
- It has a nice backlighting feature.
