Well, I been reading some info about x-10 lights and I have some basic info in my head but not the whole story. If you kind folks could point me in the right direct after reviewing my needs, I would greatly appreciate it.

Pronto IR -> x-10:
Ir543 (16 devices, one house code)? or han1 (27 IR commands)
If I want to do simple all on/off, individual on/off, or individual dimming which is the better choice? How are scenes different than individual dimming? If I want scenes, then I need the han1?

Lamp plug-in modules: what are the options and trade offs?

Overhead can lights: I have manual toggle light switch with a dimmer slide. Is there an equivalent switch that also has x10 capability or I don’t lose the manual control?

For a three-way x10 switch: do both switches need to be 10x? i.e. master/slave or can one be x10 and the other not?

I also have an overhead fan/light. I haven’t seen a combination x10 control for this which has dimming and speed control. Is there such an animal?

I know it’s all basic, but it’s all new to me.

Thanks in advance,
Ken H

IR 543 will meet your needs. With it and your Pronto you will be able to turn off and on plus dim upto 16 differnet cirucits. You will of course have to download a CCF with the codes from the file section.

Lamp modules.. Plug them in and plug a lamp into it. Easy as that. On/Off plus dimming.

Overhead cam lights. A regular X10 swtich replacing your dimmer switch will provde on/off and dimming plus on and off from the switch.

Three way switch. Both HAVE to use X10 switches (master/Slave). You can not use regular switches with X10 switches

Overhead fan/light. It fan is controlled with a wall switch you can use an inductive dimmer module to turn fan on and off only.

Scene lighting. Scene lighting involve high quality switches that are programable. With these swiches each can be set to dim up or down at a certain rate (PCS switches up to 13 minutes)They can also be set up to come to a predetermed lighting level(without having to go to full bright first). Each switch in a circuit is programmed individually with its own base address. Then each switch is also assigned a scene address and number. All switches can then be controlled as programmed with one X10 command. I use PCS smartswtiches available from the same site as above. also,if interested go to http://www.pcslighting.com There are tons of post on the subject. Do a search for "scene" and "PCS"

Some ceiling fan moters will hum even if you use one of the inductive dimming switches. Another option is to use one of the relay type switches made for flourescent lighting to turn the fan motor on/off and use the ceiling fan chain to preset the fan speed.

I saw this "Generic Fan Switch" at GagetHome.com. I haven't picked one up yet, but it may be what your looking for. Here's a link, but if the link doesn't work goto above mentioned site, switches, and on the bottom of the 2nd page is the fan switch.
hope this helps!

Erk,

That'll work with fans but it doesn't solve the fan motor humming problem. Some fans will hum, some won't and you can't guarentee that a particular brand/model will not hum just because someone else has one that doesn't.
