I've had my T2 over two years now, and I'm finding that the hard-keys need a very hard press to make them work now, suggesting that the contacts need cleaning.

How easy is this to do? Anyone have a guide to opening up the T2 and cleaning the contacts?

One problem could also be that the conductive coating has worn out -- and cleaning the remote may actually make matters worse (ie. even less keys working correctly). However, I know there's a spray you can buy that'll help restore the coating... I think it's been mentioned in the One For All forum.

I would shy away from getting any kind of conductive coating spray near a T2's insides. you can buy a new rubber keypad for pretty cheep though. only takes 5 minutes to replace.

Any ideas where I can buy this in the UK?

If you are an end user , you might be able to buy keypads directly from www.rticorp.com
If they will not sell directly to you, leave me a post and I will call them on Monday since it is a national holiday right now, I don’t think anyone is at work. I will see If I can get you a keypad right away.

Looks like the keys weren't the only problem. Found this morning that my T2 had lost all it's programming. So, no problem, I just reloaded the configuration from the PC.

However, whilst all the buttons are now programmed okay, the remote doesn't seem to be sending out any IR codes, nothing works.

HELP!! Any idea what may be wrong. Remote is 2 years old now, is that the expected life for the T2? I can't decide whether to get the keys and IR function repaired, or give up on the T2.

Brief update:
I've given up. I finally took the plunge and opened up my T2 to see if I could see any obvious reason why it's not transmitting IR. Discovered lot's of flaking bits of contact material on the keypads, and no sign of anything physical that is stopping the IR working.

Since RTI still have no support network in Europe, despite Dave Palmer of RTI assuring me one would be in place by 2nd quarter of 2001, it's going to have to go in the bin :(

Very, Very dissapointed with the durability of the T2 - great concept, poor quality.

Any suggestions for a replacement. I don't intend spending so much this time (524 UKP for the T2), so maybe an MX-500 might be the replacement I'm looking for.

Don’t Panic Yet!
This may sound simple stupid, and well it is, but this will tell you if your in real trouble.

In the control panel, use the clear all function to erase all your remotes memory, I am guessing you have it backed up.

Next, build a one button test page with the software, but do this first—
Go to “EDIT REMOTE POPERTIES” -- “OUTPUT” force the output to IR.

Next, assign an IR power command, on off whatever for your receiver, to the one button.

Next Try your remote.

If it does not work, more likely than not, your flaky keypad is freaking out your remote, I have seen this happen before. I have also seen a few bad IR emitters.

If it does work, try reloading your program and do the --“EDIT REMOTE POPERTIES” -- “OUTPUT” force the output to IR thing.

If that does not work, rebuild your remote from scratch testing as you go, if it works up to a point and then starts freaking out, then half your memory could be in trouble.

Let us know what happens,.

If you still don’t want the remote anymore, Ill take it. $$$

Oh, buy the way, the remote can only send one command at a time, so for example if your keypads conductive surface has conductive flakes all over it and you push a button causing multiple shorts, the remote might try to send multiple commands which will be nothing more than garbage as far as your equipment is concerned.

Try blowing the inside out with a can of compressed air used to clean electronic parts.

Many thanks for the reply David.

In the control panel, use the clear all function

you have it backed up.

Done that already.

Next, build a one button test page with the software, but do this first—
Go to “EDIT REMOTE POPERTIES” -- “OUTPUT” force
the output to IR.

Yes, already checked that - it was already set to IR, but I reset it anyway, and uploaded to the remote.

Next, assign an IR power command, on off whatever
for your receiver, to the one button.

Okay, hadn't tried that. Have now (several times), still no reaction from my equipment. Even tried to get the remote to re-learn the IR commands, which it seems to do okay, but will not transmit the IR.

If it does work, try reloading your program and
do the --“EDIT REMOTE POPERTIES” -- “OUTPUT” force
the output to IR thing.

I've tried reloading several times, each time clearing out the remote, making sure IR output mode is set, uploading program. Still not working.

Let us know what happens,.

My conclusion - it's broken :( My wife is devastated - when she's at home and I'm at work she can't work out how to turn everything on, select the right inputs, etc.

I've tried cleaning out all the flaked off contacts, but suspect that the keypad needs replacing anyway.

If you still don’t want the remote anymore, Ill
take it. $$$

Thanks, but I don't really want to get into the hassle of shipping it to the US. David, once again thanks for taking the time to help.

UPDATE:

RTI is fixing me up with a new rubber pad and top for my T2. So I'm good to go. Please ignore this post. However, if you need one too, just drop an email to the service department at RTI. Their email address is in the contact section of their website. But do me a favor, wait a couple days so they send mine out first. I'd rather not have them have a change of heart and all the sudden get stuck buying one because they were inundated with requests.

Thanks.

Hello All.

I know this thread is old, but I'm just now experiencing a problem with my T2's rubber key pad. The guide and exit button are sticking. I've tried alcohol and contact cleaner on them and have opened the unit up. Nothing seems to work. In fact, it's getting worse. My dealer suggests that I can send it to RTI and they'll send me a refurbished one for $150. I don't want to spend the $150. I noticed earlier in the thread that someone said you can get a new rubber pad for cheap. Where might one find that?

Thanks for your help.
