I have been a home theater enthusist for over 15 years. I am really suprised at the remarks regarding this very nice, well made and simple remote. I own a Toshiba 56" Cinema Wide rear projection monitor, a Denon 5700 AV receiver, Pioneer Laser disc player, Panasonic DVD, two Panasonic VCR's (1 is super VHS), JVC CD Player and a Polk Audio Speaker System. I also own a Marantz RC2000 (which I love!) The problem is my family and especially my wife hate the fact that they cannot operate my system unless I am there. The answer: The Sony RM-AV2000 remote! They don't need to have the names on the remote changed because they only use a few of them anyway! Life before the Sony remote: My cell phone ringing and my wife or kids asking what the fourth button on the left side of the "King Tut" remote was for. Life with the Sony: Lower cell phone bills! To cap it off, there is a need for something by everyone at some point. So get off it! If you think the Sony is a "Cheap toy", buy the Marantz or Pronto. If you are a hard core HTE you should be looking at a Phast hand held touch screen. Otherwise quit your crying and do your research. Later!

I've been looking for a good remote, but still havn't been able to find one that I like. Now that I've visited this site and read all about the AV2000, I want one. If anyone could give me some information on where I could get one, I would most appreciate it.

I have had my sony remote for about 6 months now.I can say that it is in no way near perfect. I decided to buy a pronto for more control. The sony ran out of memory really fast.I have a good deal of high end equipment and this remote is the first universal that has been able to learn all the equipment. The problem is not all can be programed at once because of the memory. I just spent more than 2X the ammount of the sony on the pronto and I can honestly say what a waste of money.Dont get me wrong, the pronto is an excellant piece. The editing is awesome! PROBLEM is that it cant learn all my equipment like the less expensive sony can. It is also in no way as user freindly in its day to day control. What I mean is that if maybe it had a few more hard buttons like the sony it would require you to constantly have to look at the screen to see what you are doing. I give sony an A on learning,a D- on size,a C- on display, and finally a B on day to day use. The pronto I give a B- on learning, a A on size, a B on display, and an D on d2d use

I too have more of a mid-level HT system w/ 40" misty, pioneer ld/dvd, sony AV rcvr and VCR but have also begun using the new digital cable service available in my area from Cox. Anywho, two questions, 1) any problems w/ getting the scientific atltanta functions to work and 2) am considering buying that sony 200 disc system, can it be "learned" by the rm-av200 or am i S-O-L?

Thanks.

PS - I've seen several responses re: a $110 price tag for the rm-av200. please forward me any info on where and how i can get it for that. thanks again.

I just picked up the RM-AV2000 yesterday and I too was disappointed in its performance. Its a bit on the large size (but so am I!) and I could see people with smaller hands having a problem holding it. There are a number of reasons that I am going to take this remote back to the store, but I will preface all of this with the statement that I do not have Sony equiptment. Perhaps trying this remote was a mistake in the first place as it was designed for use with Sony products? Then again it comes preprogrammed with other mfg's codes and is a learning remote as well. So, let's just begin....

First of all, the av2000 has a very poor bank of codes. The ones my Pioneer equiptment responded to handled only the most basic functions (volume/channel/mode). I first thought "oh, I'll just learn them all". Wrong. I ran out of memory before I could finish programming my GI cable box. So now I have to go back and erase some of the less important keys I had programmed. Not too big a deal, but annoying nonetheless. I wanted this remote to replace all of the functions of my 6 remotes.

My next complaint is about the backlight. It is nice and bright and not a problem to see the screen. The problem is the backlight only comes on when you push the light button. Why? Poor design. This unit should light up when any key is pressed, bottom line.

Finally, the "buttons". I thought I could handle some buttons that weren't labelled perfectly as long as they made sense. Then when I had to program "subtitle" to mean "select track" on my CD player I realized I couldn't. It would be ok if you could use any of the labels on any screen but you can't do that either. Want to use a key labelled "display" for your amp/receiver? Sorry. No can do. "Display" only works on TV or VCR screens. That key must say video2 on the amp screen. Very frustrating I must say.

Well, rather than sit here and tell you every complaint, why don't I make some suggestions instead:

If you own a majority of Sony Equiptment, this is a great remote. You won't have to worry about filling up the memory with learned commands, and the button labels will closely match your equiptment. The backlight.....well, that's still an issue.

If any Sony engineers happen to stumble across this, here are my suggestions....

Make the backlight come one automatically when any key is pressed.

Upgrade the memory. Memory is cheap. They should be able to double or triple the capacity without affecting the price much.

Upgrading the memory then allows for MORE preprogrammed codes for other brands including more advanced functions. Again, I'd pay an extra $10 if I had more codes and more memory.

Make the labels customizeable. I realize that this remote is not expected to be the Pronto, but at least provide a bank of common labels and let the user choose his/her button labels. This can't be too hard and with a memory upgrade sure seems an easy solution.

Perhaps I am being to critical of this unit, but I was expecting this unit to solve all of my problems. Now I don't know what I'll do. I guess I'll go pick up a learning remote like the Cinema6 or the AV producer 8 (when released). In the meantime I'll continue using the Sony and then return it.

Computability.com has it for that, but you need to phone them and mention this site.

I also got it for $110, but I ordered it from J&R. www.jandr.com. I called the 800 number, and told them Computability had it for $110. They price matched it. They also have it in stock, and a return policy with no restocking fee.

I have a 50ES receiver and the remote blows. However, I'd prefer to wait until something better comes along. I love that my remote can read the disc and track titles from my mega changer. Any word on a successor to the AV2000?

There does exist a Sony two-way learning LCD remote. The problem is, it's only in Japan right now. It's physically the same as the remote that comes with the 50ES remote, but with more features. No... I don't know how the contrast or battery life is. There's a photo on one of the What's New archive pages.

I'm looking at getting a learning remote, and while cost IS an object, the most important thing I want to know is that it will handle all of my electronics without having to spend an entire afternoon programming it.

Here's what I have:
A JVC television (26", no PIP")
A JVC 4-head VCR
A Sony DVP-S500D DVD player
A Toshiba 6-head VCR (model M752)
A Sony A/V Receiver
A Sony 5-disc CD changer

I also intend on purchasing a Sony VVega TV in the near future, and a Dolby Digital-capable receiver.

Now the problem is that the remote to the Toshiba VCR managed to commit suicide into a bucket of water, so if whichever remote I choose can't get the features of my VCR, it's no good to me. The ergonomics aren't as important to me as the ability to control all of my devices. Which control is best-suited to me?

Thanks!

Although initially impressed - this remote will not learn the Interactive buttons for my SKY DIGITAL Digibox.

I'm not happy after paying 150 pounds sterling
