It wasn't the original aspect ratio, the sides were cropped.

Daniel,
So 2.35:1 is what it should be ? Sorry for the dumb questions just trying to see how it compares to 16:9.

2.35:1 is how it should be presented, with bars on the top and bottom. There were several scenes where it was quite noticable that it was cropped (especially in Phantom Menace, the scene where they're underwater in the sub, you only see half of each person's face).

"Just curious:
Are the movies on CBC going to be native HD or upconverted DVDs ? If HD I wonder what they use as a source ? D-VHS perhaps ? or some kind of commercial broadcast media ?
Anyone know ?"
CBC HD program procurment is deliverred on Sony HDCAM SR reels. The HD program is ingested from a Sony SRW-5000 HDCAM VTR through a Thompson Automation system to a Pinnacle Program Stream Server for play out to air.
Believe me, lots of tax dollars at work!
If I tell you any more CBC secrets, I'll have to kill you! Yuk! Yuk!

I love the use of the term "ingested" when talking about electronics! :-)
I'm all for HD - I have a Sony cheapie (comparitively speaking) HD cam myself.
For Lord of the Rings, is this the "theatrical" or "extended" version?

Hi Nickmosh, I'm using the Antennas Direct DB8 [Link: antennasdirect.com]in downtown Oakville. I receive 18 very-stable digital channels. The DB8 has very flexible aiming characteristics which is a benefit if you are not using a rotor. If you are, an antenna like the Antennas Direct 91XG [Link: antennasdirect.com]will get you more range. I am not using a preamp. My antenna is 50' above ground and faces south. I receive all Toronto and Buffalo-area stations and 2 Rochester stations. I'm on Hamilton Mountain. I'm looking at the Channel Master 4228 or the Antennas Direct DB8. I don't intend to use a rotor, so I'm lending toward the flexibility of the DB8 for both Toronto and Buffalo stations. I'm not sure whether I'll get Rochester (or Erie) decent from here. Did you get the DB8 locally or order it from their web site? If so, any problems importing it?

hi,
i'm new here. I live in scarborough (east toronto) close to 401. i installed a DB4 a few days ago. I have pointed the antenna towards south west and i'm getting the following channels;
Fox (Buffelo) - strong signal ABC (Buffelo) - once in a while NBC (Buffelo) - once in a while UPN (Buffelo) - strong signal CBS (Buffelo) - strong signal PBS (Buffelo) - not so strong signal
CTV (Toronot) - strong signal CBC-Eng (Toronot) - strong signal CBC-Fre (Toronto) - strong signal CityTV (Toronto) - once in a while Toronto1 (Toronto) - once in a while
now my question is..
which direction should i point to get CityTV, Toronto1 and my other weak signals from Buffelo? should i get another DB4 and add it with my current setup? if so what switch should i get to combine the signal? any input would be welcome.
thank you

Would anybody be able to provide me with the azimuth, elevation and tilt for a Directv Phase III dish for Toronto? Tried googling this but no luck for Toronto, as it requires the input of a US zip code.
I got a SIR-TS160 receiver so I can watch OTA digital channels in Toronto, but the installed firmware is out of date and causes constant reboots. I'd like to hook the receiver up to a direct sat feed to take the firmware 1.0.14 upgrade, got my hands on a dish, but can't find pointing info.
Thanks in advance for your help!

ill have to go outside and check out what mine exactly is. What I did, I remember was went to this site [Link: www3.telus.net] and said using a Dish500, I was pointing at Directv 101 and Directv 119 out of Toronto (it will say, there is an error but say ok). Took that number and then applied it with some fine touching to get a 80+ signal on all transponders (Well 110 is 70s, 80s at night, but nothing on it except HD which I dont have with Direct). Pointing the Phase III was really sensitive, as I remember the difference in a pencil nudge that we did was 15 dB

I have the same SIR-TS160, and ran into the same problems regarding the firmware. search my earlier posts, [and also those of xeon450], - to cut a long story short, I tried for weeks to do the satellite upgrade with no sucess. I finally ended up sending the unit to Samsung for the upgrade, and returned to a friend in Buffalo, who forwarded the unit back to me. (RC member xeon450 had similar experience) works great with the upgrade. Good Luck. On 05/31/05 17:44 ET, dx99 said...

c6242 & ontariocraig, thanks for the heads up.
I had started out by phoning Samsung product support in New Jersey when I realized that the firmware was out-of-date and my receiver kept rebooting... A Samsung USA support tech told me that they'd would have to charge me $300 for the upgrade, as my receiver is a refurb. He agreed that the charge was obscene, and suggested that it would be better/cheaper for me to set up 3 lnb dish to get the update from the sat datastream. So I thought it would be a sure thing. Now I know otherwise.
I'll still set the dish up this weekend, although, based on your experience, my expectations will not be high.
Will let you know what happens.

What is the latest revision models for some of the Samsung models out there? Additionally, which ones are user upgradeable and do not have to be sent in for service?
