Tom,

Thanks a lot for this! I will send this as soon as I get home this afternoon (I am in Europe, time now 2.49 pm). I will also send my CCF, so you can see how I have organized my CDs using SNL. Haven't made my Player yet, should I do this before the corresponding List is made? (I did it the other way with my CDs, list first, then trial and error to create the player).

Do you agree that DVDs are best sorted by disc title alone, and with no tracks?

I guess that I should clarify how my changers
link together. Sony put a color on-screen menu
(RCA video output to a TV) feature on this player.
It allows you to type in (via keyboard) all artist,
disc, and track titles for its 200 discs. I display
the output on a small monitor in my equipment
rack. Like all the newer changers, you can also
add a 2nd unit. However this 2nd unit is just
a basic changer (i.e. no on-screen menu feature).
When the two are linked together, the advanced
model will now allow you to display information
for all 400 discs.

I have just started looking at SNL and I am in exactly the same position.

I run a CX270 (with tv monitor out) and slink to a CX240. The display of the CX270 is great and I don't want to give it up. I also by default have random set for mega control like Ripper. What we need is a discrete 'Player' button because on the remote it is only a toggle and there is no way to determine which player is active.

Tony,

I understand your issue. It took me a while but I now understand. I have played with both my CX400s with the SLINK cable connected. If I remember correctly, when the slave (Command Mode 3) player starts playing, the Mega Light lights up on Player #1 and the text displayed is for the disc in Player #3. If this is indeed the case, you should be able to simply create 2 SNL players using Command Mode #1 and Command Mode #3 device commands respectively. Then, you simply have to set a SNL Disc's Player Name to the appropriate player.

Give it a shot. This is the only chance you have of making this work. It does require that you bypass all Mega selection on Player #1, however, as I mentioned, I seem to recall that Player #1 detects when the Slave Player starts playing and automatically flips to Mega Mode. It's definitely worth trying out.

Lyndel,

Thanks for your advice.

Unfortunately the 2nd changer is located out of sight and is not directly controllable by remote, hence dual use of the slink connection. I am curious to know if what you suggest might work so I will try when I get home.

I think the CDP-CX270 is too old. When connected via slink the only button which works on the slave changer, CDP-CX240, is the power button. 'REMOTE' appears on the display and all other buttons are disabled.

I found my manual for the CDP-CX270 (same as for CDP-CX90ES), which by the way has no mention of the word MEGA, and no MEGA on the unit itself, just a PLAYER button.

Guess I can't have it both ways. The OSD of the CDP-CX270 via video out is too handy too give up. That along with the X-Fade and Random features.

I thought maybe I could add a manual step. As I will know which PLAYER is currently selected by looking at the OSD I thought I could use the hard keys to to toggle the PLAYER and have 'delay until track' set in SNL. Can I get SNL to show on the disc (on the side buttons with '123-1' or '123-2' for example) or track (in the disc name header with 'Crow Soundtrack [1] or Crow Soundttrack [2] for example) listing which changer contains the actual CD ? I realise I can do the 2nd option manually but I only want the player # to show on the track listing panel and not the disc panel.

If this is not possible I will still use SNL even if it is only for display purposes. If I change my mind at a future date I can easily make the CDP-CX240 the master. I will still have the mega functionality and will only lose the OSD.

Tony,

As Wolfgang Scheele pointed out to me, you can get something like you want as follows:

Set the Short Name for each "Player" to 'A'/'B' or '1-'/'2-' etc..

Select Display Disc #s in the Advanced List Options.

The text that will be written on the Disc buttons is in the following format:

'A###' or '1-###' where '###' is the disc slot number.

The only difference in what you requested is that the numbers are reversed.

I was running an update on my existing SNL today (using version 2.0.0.3) & I noticed a funky behavior with the "Keep Sorted" option.

I always thought that if you picked "Keep Sorted" at the top level of the list, all the artists AND albums would sort alphabetically. That didn't happen....

I have many artists with multiple albums and occasionally, the albums would not be in sorted order.

Even stranger, if you then click on the artist name, "Keep Sorted" remains checked. Toggling the checkbox with the artist's name highlighted doesn't do anything.

However, once you click on a disc, the checkbox clears, and turning on "Keep Sorted" sorts the discs as expected (plus turns the checkbox on for all the other discs belonging to the artist).

Is it possible to cascade the sorting behavior, so toggling the checkbox at the list level applies to the entire list, and so on down the line?

Best,
Brad

Brad,

First off. If you ever want a problem debugged, you will need to stay current. Version 2.0.0.4 has been out for quite a while. Please download it.

Second, there is currently no cascaded sorting option and no immediate plans for one. Sorting is also affected if you do CSV imports (Lists are imported as they appear in the CSV). I know it is a real pain but you will need to uncheck and recheck the Sort for Artist to resort following a CSV import.

I'll put it on the wish list but I make no promises.

I still do work on SNL but very rarely these days. I've been swamped @ my day job.

The Add artist button seems to have become transformed into an Add disc button!!! I'm using 2.0.0.4, but this is the first time I've used any v2.0.0.x

I've worked around it by exporting to XML and then adding the artists and reimporting to an empty list.

It would have helped if the generated XML had the occasionally line break though! :-)

Rob,

Haven't seen you here before. Welcome.

Nothing changed between 1.9.9.11 and 2.0.0.X in this area.

I've looked through the code. In the original code, you could only Add an Artist from the 'Add/Edit Disc' dialog, not from the 'Edit Lists' dialog.

If you think it's broken, send me via email a screen print (JPG please) and a more detailed description of the problem including reasons WHY and HOW you are having to work around this perceived problem.

If you have an older version that supports 'Add Artist' from the 'Edit Lists' dialog, I'd love to know what version and have a screen print from that one.

I think this is pilot (USER) error but would like to confirm. You should also understand the following:

1. Artists are owned by a list. Artists in one list do not appear in others.

2. Discs are owned by an artist. Discs in one artist/list do not appear in another.

3. Should you have 2 discs with the same slot numbers and the same SNL player, both discs will appear as 'Duplicates' if you run a report.

Here's the procedure you should be following to add all your artists first.

1. Create a new list. and close this dialog with OK

2. Select your new list in the Edit Lists Dialog and click Add Disc.

3. From the Add Disc Dialog, you can add as many artists as you see fit.

4. Once you are done, simply click the 'Add' button to close the Add Disc Dialog.

5. Now, you should have all your new artists in your list as well as a bogus disc assigned to one specific artist. You can then delete the bogus disc and continue adding all your other discs.

If you still believe there is a problem. Please email me as requested above.

Thanks,
Lyndel

You were right, it was pilot error. It's been a while since I last used SNL (1.9.9.11 version). It just seemed to be counter-intuitive that there wasn't an "Add artist" button, and I didn't remember the feeling of puzzlement from my earlier use.

OK - I picked up a Sony CX-875P a few weeks ago. It's an awesome DVD changer, and complements the two Sony 400 CD units nicely. At this stage I am sitting at 3,803Kb with my CCF file for the TSU6000. I had originally wanted to do bitmaps, but I like the SNL for it's ease of use. Plus I may not have the memory left.
So (after some rambling) here's the question: I noticed from previous posts that other SNL users have grouped their DVDs by genre, using the Artist field in SNL as the genre. But what if you want to search by movie title?
I'm also going to check with the wife as to her preference, if she would select a DVD either by genre or title.
Again, any thoughts or ideas are most welcome!

Ripper,

You wil most likely have to create 2 lists. This is a pain. However, using the Bottom Links in either list, you can scroll between movies.

This is indeed a limitation of SNL. If you read Leo's site, this is one of the reasons that he had a TODO to move discs to their own separate area in the SN_Library.XML file to allow for more flexibility in areas such as this.

If you don't use SNL as your primary data source, you can always use a CSV import to populate both lists. Also investigate the 3rd party data field that can be assigned for Artists, Discs, etc... This was provided in version 2.0.0.4 to aid in exchanging data with 3rd party programs such as DVD Profiler, Catraxx, CDJ, etc... I tried to provide a good writeup on UserData in the Release Notes. If you have not read them, please do so.

I hope that others will contribute here as well.

Lyndel

Hope this helps.
