Hi,

I'm a halfway competent guy with computers. I know that I won't be able to find time to learn how to actually program my remote using the JP1, but I WOULD like to get a JP1 and use it to back up my URC-9910

Here are my questions:

1. I've read the stuff from Rob about IR.exe, but I'm still a little confused. What do I need to do - the bare minimum - to back up my remote? Which downloads, and what steps in using the software, just to back it up, not to make any changes at all. I'd prefer to use just one piece of software and no excel if possible!
2. One-for-all are currently "capturing" my devices that I mailed in to them: the PB6200 and the DAV-BC150 (see below). Once they're captured, they're going to send them over the phone. Once I get them over the phone, if I back up my remote, will they also be backed up, so I never have to call one-for-all again?
3. One-for-all will send me the advanced codes for the newly captured devices. Where should I post those? (I assume they'll be useful)

Thanks all!

If you were to read the following doc, you would discover that you could learn how to use JP1 and do the programming yourself is much less time than it took you to box up the remotes and send them to UEI. Plus, you wouldn't be without the remotes for the week or so that it will take UEI to capture all the signals.

This doc describes using the KM Excel program, but you could also use the java RM program, as described here:

[Link: controlremote.sourceforge.net]

However, if you want to go about this the hard way, you're certainly able to do so.

All you need is the IR.exe program and the zip file containing the RDFs. Then once you have your remote programmed over the phone, you should download the memory using IR.exe and save it. This will contain all the upgrades that they loaded. But, it doesn't mean that you'll never have to contact UEI again, because when you buy the next device that needs a new code, you will have to start the process all over again.

Rob, you're a good man. I'm going to try to learn the JP1 stuff bit by bit. But in the mean time mailing the darned things was the best this JP1-newbie-simpleton could do. I'm ordering my JP1 cable today. Would you like me to post or email the advanced codes when I get them? Where should I do that?

Are you asking them for advanced codes that I don't already have listed on my site? If so, then please forward the email to me when you get it (my email's on the front page of my site).

Hey Rob,

OK, I installed IR.exe and RM. I used IR.exe to backup my remote. Great!

I also downloaded over the phone the new devices codes captured from my remotes.

The new codes are:

BenQ PB6200: TV1212
Sony DAV-BC150: RCVR/1822 or DVD/1824

And he emailed me the advanced codes, which I've pasted in below.

So here's my question:

How do I take a device from IR.exe to RM? On the faq's you sent, I can only see how to load one from the web. Since I downloaded mine over the phone, how do I move them to RM to edit, and then move them back to IR.exe and my device? I've read your FAQs and just can't make sense of that.

When I'm trying to create a new device in RM, it wants protocol ID and protocol parameters, yet IR displays these using numbers not names, and using fixed data, not protocol parameters. So if you could type out a quick guide to how to get a device from IR.exe to RM and back again after editing, I'd be much obliged. Below are the advanced codes

So here's my question:

How do I take a device from IR.exe to RM? On the

move them back to IR.exe and my device? I've read
your FAQs and just can't make sense of that.

The process isn't designed to work that way. The idea is that you learn the signals from your original remotes, then look at the decoded data in IR and create the upgrade yourself (assuming there isn't one already created in the JP1 file section). By downloading UEI upgrades over the phone there is no process established to go backwards and convert these upgrades into JP1 upgrade files, so you're stuck with what you've got.

Fortunately, there are JP1 upgrade files available for both of the devices you downloaded, so you can use those.

Also, if you email me a copy of your IR download with the UEI upgrades in them, I will manually convert them into JP1 upgrade files.

Rob, did you notice within the IR.exe dump I sent you that there are a few codes that IR couldn't crack.

The files you sent work great, BTW, and I posted them on yahoo.

I only looked at the fresh dump with the upgrades, I didn't look at your keymoves or anything else. The BenQ was easy as it was exactly the same as the current BenQ file at Yahoo. For the Sony, I copied all the relevant codes from Rob H's Sony website (at [Link: hifi-remote.com] ) over to KM and observed what hex codes were generated. I then compared these hex codes with the ones in the downloaded upgrades to see which functions were assigned to each button.

You'll notice in the DVD file I created, I included a function called "Guide?", this was part of the downloaded upgrade but didn't match any code from Rob's website. You'll also notice that there are a bunch of functions in the Audio upgrade where I just posted the OBC number. These were assigned to numeric buttons in the downloaded upgrade and again, they don't match any codes from Rob's site. Do any of these functions really do anything? If so, what? I'd like to pass the info onto Rob so he can include it. Also, are there any buttons on your original Sony remote that aren't included? If so, could you learn them and post the device code and OBC code for each of them please, so we can include these also. Hopefully, it will be obvious how to include these in the files I sent you.
Rob.
