Hi, I got a 2117 in the mail today, and it seems to work fine, except it won't learn. There is a predefined code for my TV, that works fine. But if I take that same TVs remote and try to learn from it, I get "error" every time. Also refuses to learn from my preamp remote control.

Tried all the usual stuff: reset to mfg settings; changed batteries in remotes being learned from, varied position and lighting.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Eric

Have you tried holding down the button on the teaching remote until 2117 stops blinking fast (or whatever the indication of end-of-learning)? What if you try learning on a different button?

If the 2117 is like the 2116, there are some buttons you can't teach to, like the Power, Scan/Fav, exit.

Hi,

Thanks for those ideas.

Yes, I hold the button down continuously until the LED changes from "learning" to "error".

The 2117 as I understand it is identical to the 2116 with the addition of RF support. I have tried learning on a number of keys including "play" and number keys.

Any other thoughts? I suppose it's possible the unit is defective. I'll call Radio Shack to see.

Thanks,

Eric

1'st guess. Your technique is wrong: The two remotes are too close together or too far apart or not correctly aimed at each other.

2'nd guess. The 2117 is defective.

3'rd guess. The remotes you tried to learn from use very strange protocols. You could tell us the setup codes that partially work so we could tell you whether those protocols are strange and/or you could try learning from some OEM remote you haven't tried yet.

4'th guess. You only think you did a mfg reset. You got that process wrong and your learning memory is still full.

The 2117 turned out to be defective. I took it and my original remote in to a Radio Shack store. They tried to get mine to learn. Then they opened a 2116 (they didn't have the 2117) and it learned fine from my original remote. Case solved. Thanks for the help here.
