I have used both codes and tried the learning mode from the Dish remote but I can not get the Proto Neo to work. Works great with my Denon Rcvr, Toshiba DVD and Sony XBR2 HDTV---just can not seem to get that Dish 4000 settop to work. Please Help :)

I am not familar with each particular Dish system, but there is lots of info on them. First did you try the preprogrammed codes? Do a search on dish here and in the pronto board and you'll find out what your problem is. What you're hoping is that you dish is IR and UHF. Some do only UHF and if that's the case your out of luck. On some of the older models you have to disable the UHF before the IR will work. I don't know if you have to change something on the remote for it to work in IR as well. Part of the change is taking off the antenna on the back of your reciever. There is something else but I don't remember. Like I said, do a search. Its been addressed before. If you have money though, just get a PVR 501. Learning is no problem and you will absoulutely love its features. It OEM remote isn't to shabby either.

Oh yah, don't even bother contacting dish about this matter. Their tech support is usually pretty good, but they are clueless about their remotes. Most of them don't even know that their remote transmit in UHF or understand why you would need the reciever to be able to pick up IR.

The 4000 receiver is an IR receiver. I have tried the codes, both of them. Are there more than two ?

Your statement suprised me so I did a little research. Does your remote say UHF at the bottom on the front. That is the UHF I'm talking about. That alone doesn't mean it won't do IR. However you appear to be out of luck. 4000 is a UHF only model. There are some mods you can do with the purchase of some hardware, but nothing you probably want to do. Again, get a 501. $200 if you extend your contract. My wife hated our satelite until we got the 501 and now she loves it. It's that much better. Also, did you try a search?

ARGHHHH!!!!! You are right. Dab Gumit!!!! I was ready to toss that remote into the drawer. I am not going to get another receiver until the HD ones are out this fall. And it must have Firewire on it or I am not going to purchase. Maybe I can buy someones 501 who isn't happy withit for cheap? Thanks franky for the info. :)

Good luck. I think the only people that won't be happy with the 501 are ones that just don't like satelite. Even at that, there are ones on Ebay without remotes still selling for $200+. Not to sound like a broken record, but the 501 is a great reciever. It is much better in every possible way and it has the recording capabilities.

JoeSb,

There is a lot of info on this site: www.carltonbale.com

Before doing the upfit, try to turn on the IR receiver as indicated on this site. You might be lucky and have the IR receiver eye installed on your receiver!

That's a pretty cool site. Talk about fitting a nitch though. And I was suprised when I found remote central. Has anyone tried these mods out? I have an old UHF model that I woundn't mind converting only his disclaimers spooked me a little. Also, how would you know what codes to program to the remote? That's probably in that part about recommended remotes that I skipped.

Hello Franky,

I did the mod myself a couple of years ago and it is working just fine since then! The remote that comes with the Dish Player receiver emits both UHF and IR signals so you don't have to program any special code into it.

Should have know that. I remember learning codes to my remote and then not understanding why they wouldn't do anything. How difficult was the upfit kit? Did it take long? Good instructions?

With the instructions and pictures provided by Carlton it is quite simple to follow and complete the upfit. My receiver was still under warranty so I didn't want anything to show following the mod. By pulling out the front panel following Carlton instruction, it was easy to do and took me about 15 minutes to complete - and it didn't show at all!
