Noob here - please be gentle...

Looking for a very simple to use remote with RF capabilities. My TV is 20' away from the component cabinet, and the cabinet door is solid wood.

I've been using an IR splitter, and it works well with the stock remotes. But it's time to simplify things for my bride and for when my parents stay at the house.

I'm leaning toward the 670, but trying to determine if this RF device will work with it:

I need to control my AV amp, DVD player, cable box, and my TV of course. If this combo works, it can be a very nice, affordable option for my simple project.

Any feedback will be greatly appreciated!

Rick

If you already have an IR repeater, you don't need RF. Just buy the 670 and it will work just like your OEM remotes work now. And your OEM remotes will continue to work. You can always add the RF repeater later if necessary.

Right. Sometimes the Harmony doesn't work 100% out of the box with IR repeaters and needs some fiddling but most often it works fine. There's been at least one situation I've run into where the IR commands were being retranslated incorrectly by the IR repeater and so it didn't work with the Harmony (for one device), but that's more the exception than the rule.

Thanks for the reply. The reason I'm looking at the RF system now is because of the distance and angle between my TV and the component closet.

I'm concerned that the IR won't be able to cover the angle or distance.

Do you see any problem using the Next Generation RF device with the Harmony?

Thanks again,
Rick

Rchamberlain, I use that "Next Generation" battery transmitter in my PVR (SA8300HD) remote to program my schedule recordings from my PC location which is far from my HT location. In my HT location, I use my Harmony 680 directly (without an IR repeater). Out of curiosity, I tried the Next Generation battery transmitter in my 680. It controlled all my equipment except the PVR (what an irony). Also note that the capacity of this 2/3 AAA NiMH battery is only about half a regular AAA NiMH (400 vs 800 mAh). So you will have to replaced the battery more often. This Next Generation battery transmitter is really meant for a simple remote that draws very little current in standby mode. In this case, the battery will last a long time (months) - self discharge will be the determining factor. Also note that RF repeaters (including this one) are prone to RF interference.

I recommend a wired IR repeater solution like the Hot Link Pro or the Niles system.
