Doug, believe it or not, I'm basically self-taught. I've been into electronics since I was 5, believe it or not. I just hit the library in school, dug up books on stuff, and started with crystal radios. I started building kits like Dynaco after I was 13 and had Bar Mitzvah money to spend. Two of my best friends are also knowledgeable in electronics. One is an Electrical Engineer (schooled) who specializes in power transmission systems, and the other (also self-taught) designs processor-controlled elevator controllers. When we get together to party, we inevitably get into discussions about electrical theory or electronics. We're the only ones we each can have these discussions with and actually undertsand what the hell we're talking about. My formal "credentials" are actually limited. I am a Master Electrician and licensed electricial contractor, but my abilities and understanding of theory are way beyond those of all the electricians I've met over the years. They understand the mechanics of wiring, but very little about theory. As far as my A/V expertise, it's all from a deep interest in and love of the subject. If you saw my posts in the "Who Are You" thread, you know my system. I believe in good quality components, but not the extravagant stuff. There is a point of diminishing returns, and I try to avoid crossing it, because I can find better ways to spend the money. I'm no "golden ear", but I know what I like. I'm not one of those who buys expensive interconnects, but I do believe in cables better than the vermicelli wires that come with most components for physical reasons as well as electrical ones. I use a decent-quality 12-ga. speaker wire, and quad-shield RG, but nothing that costs dollars-per-foot. Larry www.fineelectricco.com

Thanks Larry, I was touched in my "audio heart" when you mentioned the Dynaco around 1973 I had an sca80Q with an outboard Quadapter (still got them) I had the 300Watt Dynaco amp, & sets of: A10's, 25's, 35's, & 1 A50 for bass -god it was hugh! (I also picked up a set of 3way dynaco's around 1980 forget the model #) I lived in that first arena of passive surround sound. Stereo sounded to me after that like mono. I went prologic in 1990ish & only in the last 4 years with the latest set ups did I really think there was a remarkable difference from the 4 Dimensional sound. Again my Lonsman (if I spelled it right) thanks for the sharing & the help you freely offer to those like me who can use a friendly hand. Doug

Doug, I had a PAT-5 preamp and AF-6 tuner, but my amp was a Southwest Technical Products amp kit, called the Universal Tiger. At the time, an honest continuous 75W/ch. was a lot. I ran a pair of Rectilinear III's. My turntable was a Dual 1229, with (what else?) a Shure V15 type III. Wow, talk about 'the good ol' days'! Larry www.fineelectricco.com

What else is right. The Shure V15 type III was the baby at the time!

Yikes! I still have a couple of V-types, in their original cases: little silver-coloured, felt-lined snap-boxes with miniature screwdrivers for the arm head, and balancing weights. And I still have the Lenco straight-arm turntable that was my favorite.... and a little mirrored gadget that you laid on the rubber mat, against the spindle, so you could see exactly where the needle was floating after balancing. I love that sh*t. .... Mike

Doesn't it still make you glow when you think of your turntable getting up to speed.... then watching that stylus slowly and gently being lowered down into the groove.... knowing you've balanced it to exactly the appropriate number of grams..... knowing just how compliant it is....... onto that glistening piece of round vinyl that you have just meticulously cleaned with the best fluid and brush that money could buy?!!!
The new systems just don't have that feel to them, do they?
... Greg

God! - I had the 1229Q dual table - Shure M91ed eliptical diamond stylus - 360 degree antiskating (for the Quad records) Larry we are long lost cousins!) - the 2 separate Eico (spelling?) tube units I had in order to get good sound from the FM radio stations!! GegM - I played the vinyl wet with distilled water! Partying with Alice Cooper at the Chateau Laurier, Leonard Cohen & Bruce Cockburn at Roosters, & Jimmy Hendrix at L'Hibou!! (...Pan to meg ryan in the scene in the restaurant with Billy "yes, oh yes, OHHH!!!") the good ol days! Dougofthenorth [thanks for the reminiscing guys - was it good for you too? Doug now lites a cigarette -~ ]

As a matter of note (UK that is), I recently read that record sales have inceased by 40% - the second year in succession they've gone up.
Oh, and am I the only that lusts after a "Clearaudio" (as briefly seen in Tomb Raider).

You would be so proud of me Larry! I just helped install a complete electrical (and plumbing) system in George's office. :) I only shocked myself once too! (Lol stupid mistake...but then again, those are what I'm famous for!) :P
