Just an FYI for you installers out there. Toshibas new line of plasmas (P66 Series) and HLC56 series of custom LCD's have no discretes like they state on their web site! The plasmas have the usual 3 step macro input but no discrete power. The LCD's have neither input or power discretes. After much go round with Toshiba (I have a contact in engineering) the discretes never made it on the firmware. They also have no intention of making a running change at the factory. They said the new models after the first of the year will get the updates. Too bad because they were a nice set.

The 42HL196 power discretes work perfect (so far) No Direct Input discretes. Need to press input than the corresponding number.

Hmmm....Maybe you missed that discussion here six months ago. There is a clunky workaround for the on command. If you want it email me.

I wish you had made this post back in April when they came out. You would have saved me the headache of buying a six pack of these b@stards and finally figuring out how to make them turn on reliably. Sorry, hit a sore spot.

Jed,
Are you talking about the HLC56 LCD's? Those are the ones I am having the most problems with. If you have a workaround for that I would be interested in knowing what to do. I actually got my distributor to take back the remainder of the ones I have.
Thanks
Craig

Toshiba has not showed much support for the ci world over the years, why show any back to that company. If they want to change there ways and show a little history of support then I might concider them. As of right now, no way.
When good enough is not good enough.

Thanks, guys.

I've been asleep at the wheel for a few months. I'm going to pull a proposal I just submitted and stick something else in. That was a close one.
Manuals?! We don't need no stinking manuals! a.. er..

Why bother with Toshiba in the first place??? A little consistancy over a year or 2 and I might take a look back.

The same could be said for Panasonic, Samsung, Sharp, etc one time or another over the past 4-5 years... It's the nature of these huge corporations making one product for several channels.

Trust me, as big as the CEDIA channel has become, we are still not big enough to be in a position to demand any features... We can call for it, and we will continue to get whatever they choose to give us.

Ultimately, the decision is made by engineers and accountants (neither of whom care about installation, or use beyond the OE remote).
The big box channel will write larger orders, and they value price point and the large print features (resolution, brightness, virtual surround speakers, etc.) over small print features (discretes, inputs, etc.).

Samsung and Sharp have seemed to hear our crys. I have pretty decent luck with them. Panasonic still has to two tiered input macro for most their stuff.

LG, NEC, Fujitsu, Pioneer & Elite, JVC, and even Sony have been pretty consistant for some time now and I try to steer my clients that way when I can.

When you ask a room full of programmers if they have any discretes for a Toshiba and they all laugh. Tells me it is just not their time yet.

If I can't control it, what good is it to me?? I know the strength of Cedia or lack there of. But some comanies seem to care and some don't. I still believe from experience that Toshiba doesn't.

I am not trying to argue, but I don't work for a big box any more and don't really care much for them and their wants and needs. Custom is custom and it takes a lot of work to come up with something that works properly.
When good enough is not good enough.

I understand your position, and I share it....
I get a little miffed when people like the OP make blanket statements that are just untrue.

The title says "Beware of new Toshiba plasmas and LCDs"...
Well, there are definitely issues regarding the current plasmas (which have been covered 10x over on this forum alone), but the IR command set on their LCDs is as thorough as anyone elses right now...

That is good to know, I know the blanket statements can get frustrating. I have said one or two myself.

It is good to know that Toshiba is coming around in some respect. Maybe next year they will be a viable option to look at up and down the line.

Funny thing is just today I was revisting a client who had a older Toshiba VCR. Of course I had to have a toggle power buton on the device page. I was commenting on discrestes and the components I was looking at all had discretes, JVC, Sony, and Yamaha. Just so happens I didn't even notice the Toshiba. Then client asks how come the vcr doesn't always turn on and off in sync with the other components.

Then I read the Toshiba discrete thread. lol
