I know, this is the installers' forum, but I have looked for other forums to ask this question. Most of them seem to be arranged by brand, and I want to ask which brands I should look at, so there is no place to ask.

Do you guys know which currently available printers have cartridges that can be refilled? We had a great little Canon printer, and recently replaced it with the ip5200, only to find at the end of one cartridge that they now have a little PC board with some kind of circuit that won't let the cartridge be used once it has gotten low. In fact, I filled a couple of cartridges today that were at 40%, and the machine now says they are empty!

We went to the Canon after discovering that HP cartridges have the little PC board.

Any ideas?

Thanks In Advance
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

I also use original cartridges.
What if you refill your cartridge a mid point.

I purchase all of my ink cartridges online at http://www.tonerforless.com/ . They are not name brand, but I have never had an problem with them and the prices are great, probably cheaper than refilling your used cartridges.

ernie, go get a color laser printer, they can be gotten for around $500 bucks....

i have a minolta 2300 i get like 3000 copies with the toner, i have saved a ton of money in ink, i to used to have a canon printer that used ink, never again. toner is like 75 bucks per color, in 2 years i have spent less than 400 in toner. and the laser quality is awsome.

i have replaced black 2 times and cyan once and magenta once thats it. we do alot of full color printing.

best money spent.

I still use a Canon inkjet for utility printing. Used this for years. Much cheaper than buying carts.

I fill the black well only. Found about 50 color carts on ebay for $3 apiece so I haven't bothered with them.

If you don't want the mess, ebay often has original carts by someone who bought too many, etc.

I tried to refill an HP without success so I stuck with my Canon. Easy.

I long time ago I bought a cartridge refill kit. Worst mess I ever made, my hands were black for weeks.

Go with Ed's idea, get a color laser printer.

Setup two printers on your pc for the one actual printer. Set one to black and white and one to color and name them accordingly.

I have the black and white set as my default. I only choose the color printer when I actually need the color, works great.

Ed's right.

We use a color laser printer for everything. I will warn you that the toner cartridges that come with the printer are only about 1/4 full. Once you replace them with full ones when they run out they last forever.

The print quality is amazing. We use a 28 pound stock designed for color copies and our quotes and other documents look like they were professionally printed. We even print most of our own marketing material with it.

Me too! Plus it gummed up the jets on my printer!!!

I screwed up on my previous post and gave the wrong link. The prices aren't bad on the link I posted before, but this is the link I really wanted to post.

Thanks, everybody. Good advice, all.

One of the refill sites lists my printer as a model they sell refill kits for. I asked them how they do it. They told me that it is not all over when the cartridge's PC board indicates empty. Instead, when it says Empty, you just click OK. The second or third time you do this, it gives a message telling you that you must be using refills. If you click OK then, the printer will just keep working and no further messages will appear.

We have a black and white laser printer, but rarely use it any more. Most of this usage is for my wife's business as a doula. She prepares instructions and info sheets, and used to go over each sheet with two or three HiLiters. It may not be cheaper, but man, it sure is quicker, to print with highlighted areas in color to begin with!
