use your fists! those are my favorite tools.

I'm assuming that this is a HD cable box or Sat. box. if that's the case try resetting the box. usually if you have the box powered on you can hold the power button (on the unit, NOT the remote) untill it reboots. then you power it back up after the time shows. at least that's how cable boxes USUALLY work...

if that dosn't help do the following:
1-check connections (see if they're loose)
2-try a different wire
3-try a different input (like if it's in digi1 try digi2)
4-try a different type of cable, if possible (If it's Opti then try Coax and vice versa)
5-Manually set the processing type. Like Ceied said, DTS and Dolby can somtimes get confused..

If THAT dosn't help then call your service provider and have them send you a new box. that box is busted.

In fact, if you've got Time/ Warner or an SA8000 then just have them replace it anyway.

I have a Hughes HD DirecTivo with an optical cable to my Sony AV receiver with optical in. All connections seem good and both receivers are less than 1 year old. The display on the Sony AV receiver changes when the audio cuts out.
(My son helped me be more specific)

Does it cut out when Dolby Digital or DTS is specifically selected on the receiver? I have noticed that some receivers out there have an "Auto" selection that is supposed to sense what the signal is and automatically select the right mode. Some of the earlier ADA Cinema Refs would get messed up when in Auto mode was selected and there was a quiet passage in the audio track, the receiver would try to switch back and forth to guess what it should be set to, thus it would cut out now and then. I don't know how the Sony's react, haven't worked with one in a while, and actually now that I think of it the last one I worked with didn't have "Dolby" or "DTS" actually listed as a sound mode to avoid the licensing thing.
