I tend to be extremly sensative to the rainbow effect of DLP's ( Rear pj, front pj, dosent matter.) I can typically see the rainbow every 15 to 20 seconds. If watching a dark seen it seems to be almost constant. Has any one else that can see the rainbow found a front projector under 12K that has been able to make the rainbow go away? I would love to hear your thoughts!

I SEE THE RAINBOW ON HD2+ FREE STANDING SETS, BUT HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO EVER SEE A RAINBOW ON THE DWIN TRANSVISION 3 FRONT PROJECTOR USING THAT SAME CHIP. THE MITSUBISHI 62" DLP DRIVES ME NUTS, BUT NEVER THE DWIN. IT IS PRICED UNDER $12K

Everyone can see color separation on DLPs that don't employ some method of masking it (the majority of products). You just need to move your head/eyes the slightest bit - talk, chew, glance to the side, etc.

I was extremely impressed with Epson's 3LCD technology at CES this year. So much so that I wouldn't even look at a DLP product given the choice on otherwise comparable equipment.

Whatever the DLP projector was that was used in DTS' demo theater at this year's CES... that was the first time I ever noticed rainbows. Really bad, too.

I've got a woman working for me who is very sensitive to rainbows. We had an Infocus 7205 and it drove her nuts. We recently replaced it with a sim2 HT300e, and now she is happy! The six segment color wheel that sim2 is using is very sweet, great color accuracy.

Check out the Sony VPL-HS51 or the Panasonic PT-AE700U. They are both LCD displays but use a new technique with the iris to gain substantial ground in contrast. You could also look at a used CRT but they require a lot of patience setting up or a technician visit. With 12Gs you can get a nice unit setup in your home.

Avoid all single chips if you are sensitive to rainbows, adding segments to the color wheel might make it less noticable, but you are still likely to get the eye fatigue from your eyes/brain assembing three distinct images displayed one at a time into a full color image.

Check out this demo for more info:

Like scott says above, look into true 3 chip models. and in your price range there are quite a few LCDs and a few D-ILAs as well.

Someday in the way distant future, a broad selection of 3 chip DLP models will be available under $10K and alongside models with D-ILA/LCOS technologies, bringing rainbow-free images to the bulk of the home theater market.

IMO, single chip DLP will be seen as the compromise that it is, and it will be offered at super low ($1k-$3k) pricing for the commercial crowd and DIY home theater guys that buy online and at warehouse clubs.

I'll be surprised if single-chip DLP projectors cost anywhere near $1000 in the (not too distant) future - more than likely you'll see this class relagated to cheap small office products and completely vanish for theater use. Most of these things are low-tech by today's standards and the only reason they can charge as much as they do is because they're not mainstream. It blows me away that some of these projectors still cost over $10K.
