The Integra receivers do a pretty good job. They don't deal well with a weak video signal. They can't lock in on it, to perform the conversion completely (or something). The image can come out looking like a destroyed cable picture, black/white and chock full of herringbone. Good, strong signal though....works good.

Man I hate those damn samsung inputs

Long story short: the guy who had that TV had not bought it from us. So it cost him more for the installation because I had to read the manual on his dime. Then he had me prep his system for a normal cable box, but changed his mind and got an HD one. Suddenly he had to buy a new DVD player (I had wired up his 480i one for him) or he had to have three more wires run under the floor.

He bought a new DVD player.

And was surprised when I charged him for the half hour it took me to straighten him out when I was out of town on a job and he kept me on the phone trying to tell me I had messed up by not installing the proper cables...for the cable box he had not told me he was going to get.

There are two upsides to this: he paid the invoice and he will not likely be calling me in the future because he could not talk his way out of paying the charge.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Crazy. I have never had a probelm with samsung TV's, and changing the scan rate on the same input. I have had the problem on Early infocus models, but never samsung. I have used upconverting receivers with the 17, 63, 74, DLP tv's, and the PPM plasmas with no problem. As for the Denon Receivers, they will output 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i.

Client called me last night to tell me he was rooting around the cable box and now has no picture. I know the problem is that he turned on the 480i setting on the cable box and I have his component cables plugged into the 480p/720p/1080i input on the back of the DLP. The other component input is 480i/480p. Damned if I do and damned if I dont. He will get an invoice for the inevitable service call...

Make no mistake - any button a client can touch - HE WILL

When he screws it up, it will be another lesson learned from the school of hard knocks. It is the best institution for learning.

Hide as many buttons as you can from your clients. I love having programmable remotes and having almost all buttons hidden.

i think the correct term for converting a composite or s-video signal to a component (YPbPr) is 'transcoding'... where your only changing the color space, but not changing the amount of information, which would be considered an up-conversion...
