I just asked the wife what her alarm code was. She didn’t know; “I haven’t used it since it was first setup”.
How do you arm/disarm every day? “Uhh the app!?! Or the keypads you have setup in the house to arm it”
Do you put the code in the app? “No, facial recognition on iPhone”

Case closed.

What alarm system allows you to arm/disarm using faceID?

I’m sure she meant to unlock her phone, which then gives her access to the alarm and control system apps.

I have more than a few clients that do not use the expensive alarm system they had installed.
They also do not remember any log in information for things like Apple, Netflix etc.
Most have to "find the book" they wrote things down in.
I have a document that lets me put all that info, along with other details about their system on a page that can be left on site.
Just have to remember to sell this document to my older clients when I go for a service call.

After 16 years in the industry, I was so burnt out and broke that I was extremely stressed and depressed. I now work for a very large company with benefits, vacation, retirement, etc. and I don't miss the industry at all. It's not fun anymore. I still love audio, 2-channel in particular so I still play with that just for my own hobby.

As far as my customers go, I just refer them over to a buddy of mine that's still in the industry for a % of the profits. It's some nice side-money and I don't have to dink around with explaining why someone's $29 Amazon firestick won't work. Screw that crap.

As for me, I'm mostly just hanging out at the beach and preparing for the sale of the main home, so we can move to the beach permanently..

I still do a very little CI work for some of the old "good" clients, but my main fun is buying stuff at auctions and such, reselling those things for some pocket change.

With used TV's there is ZERO money to be made, since large displays are SOOO cheap these days. Had a 50" PDP, that I just gave to my neighbor at the beach. Couldn't even sell it for $50.00.....

Hard to believe I sold the first Pioneer 42" PDP in my area, for 21k all those years ago. Made 6k on that TV....LOL

Years ago, at Cedia, this was a common question from reps'
"So, what did you do before getting into AV?"
The joke answer was I worked in a laundromat.

Now the question is "what do you want to do when you leave the AV business?"
That laundromat is starting to look pretty good.

Hopefully this will become my exit! Anyone need a pacifier for your baby or employee? Have a baby shower coming up? These make great gifts!

Alarm.com....even with the phone unlocked it uses TouchID/FaceID to open the app...then there is a arm/disarm button for the alarm...no code required once you are in.....times out if you navigate away and requires a new TouchID/FaceID to reopen

BULLSHIT.

The client uses their code damn near every day or night. No way they called you for the code. Now maybe they didn't know they could disconnect the power and battery, but asking you for the code? Not believing that one.

HAI panel, no apps used, the client just doesn't give a shit and only put the alarm in for the insurance discount, has obviously never used it.

Yesterday she sent a text along with a picture showing the screen on her Samsung TV. This is a standalone TV with nothing but an AppleTV connected to it, she uses this in her in home recording studio to project lyrics and other things from her mac on to the TV. Its a brand new Samsung which displays a screen that says "Check Device Power" when you select an input and the device connected to the input is not turned on. Under this text it says "Check that the device is connected properly, then try turning on the device by selecting the button below" in which there is a big box on the screen that is labelled "Power On". She is asking how to "troubleshoot" this.. I had to tell her to follow the directions on the screen and select the "Power On" box on the screen.

As far as shedding clients, I heard of one guy transferring clients to new company on an hourly fee base.
10-20 hours where the new company pays 50% of bill and client the other 50%.
After that, the hourly rate on an as-needed basis for the next 6-12 months at 75-85% of the hourly rate.
That way you're not abandoning the clients -- you get paid something for your client base and (hopefully) everyone is happy.

The other way to regain some sanity and not abandon clients is to raise your rates.
I was at $75, then $85 and now @ $100/hr.
I called a landscaper to do some basic work and he wanted to send me a shovel pushing, non-English speaking Mexican (not being defamatory, just stating facts) @ $75/hr.
I called pool company about fixing my pool cover (pull rope snapped), and they proudly announced that it would be @ $140/man/hour with 6-hour minimum.

That's not to say that I can all of the sudden charge $300 a man hour, but service rates need to reflect our skillset and end result.

Like Mac said and has been saying for several years -- we're no longer in the sales business.
We're not in a service business and just like the IT industry had to reinvent themselves with CDW shopping lists and $225-$275 per hour rates, we need to at least consider the same.
Will everyone be able to afford us -- no.
But if you bill twice as much, you only need to work a third as much to make same money.
