The other way to regain some sanity and not abandon clients is to raise your rates. I was at $75, then $85 and now @ $100/hr. I called a landscaper to do some basic work and he wanted to send me a shovel pushing, non-English speaking Mexican (not being defamatory, just stating facts) @ $75/hr. I called pool company about fixing my pool cover (pull rope snapped), and they proudly announced that it would be @ $140/man/hour with 6-hour minimum.
That's not to say that I can all of the sudden charge $300 a man hour, but service rates need to reflect our skillset and end result.
Like Mac said and has been saying for several years -- we're no longer in the sales business. We're not in a service business and just like the IT industry had to reinvent themselves with CDW shopping lists and $225-$275 per hour rates, we need to at least consider the same. Will everyone be able to afford us -- no. But if you bill twice as much, you only need to work a third as much to make same money.
